I have an e320 cdi that I bought damaged, it is repaired and failed MOT on 2 top ball joints, my friend has replaced these and I went to take it for retest on Saturday but it won't change up from 1st gear?? It is auto tiptronic, he thinks it may be that he had the black box on the n/s inner wing in bits to get at the bolt? I'm sure this is a fairly simple problem, there was little damage to the motor (fan etc) anyone know where to start looking??

At present it will drive in 1st but the revs apear to cap at 3000rpm, it will engage 1st and reverse only

Thanks

Tom

NB I nearly forgot, the speedo does not work iether and several lights are on on the dash

I think you need to take it to a dealer/independant and have the codes read and reset.

First off you need to be sure the battery is good. If the car has been off road chances are it could be down or suffering neglect. A bad battery causes a lot of these problems.

I would check battery before the transmission but there is a weakness in the shift mechanism, mine went at about 110k and the shift unit was replaced and all was fine. Remaining in one gear and capping at 3k rpm sounds very like it. there is also a cooling fan at the ECU tends to fail frying the ECU, get it replaced!! Its not expensive and saves lots of trouble.

If you get it all sorted its a great car to drive!!
