E320CDI (2000 model) key failure

One key fob will not unlock the steering when inserted. It still operated door locks. Replacing the batteries made no difference.
Any cure for this short of giving the dealer lots of cash?

Welcome, new key needed, the batterys in the key is only for the locking side, have no other use, the key is faulty!

As SAM if the key has been dropped, then a coil could have fallen off as in the picture, otherwise a new key between £150 - £200

You slip a thin knife between the case and the nylon strip to release the catch seen in the picture.

When in the case the latch sits under the unlock key
