I know there are already a couple of threads on a similar subject but I wonder if anybody can tell me whether I stand any chance of getting my rusty wheel arches on my 2000 (W reg) E321CDi Avant Garde repaired under the Mercedes Benz Warranty.

I have a full service history but not at a main dealer - does this matter??? Not sure whether this model comes under their 30 year anti corrosion warranty- surprise surprise the local main Mercedes dealer were no help at all - so thought I would ask the experts!!

Any help / advice / experience with a similar problem gratefully received!!!

Thanks

The simple answer is that you never know until you try. There are lots of get-outs that MB can use, but then again, cases that we thought had no chance have sailed through and dead certs have been turned away - hence it's impossible to say. A lot depends on how MB are feeling at the time!
Go see your dealer - its certainly worth a go and yes a 2000 E class is covered by the 30 year Mobilio, though full dealer history is a pre-requisite so that fact may not be too relevant. There also seems to be an 8 year unnoficial rule too and you do fall under this one.
In summary - ask your dealer.

Mobilo life states that from the start of the fifth year services are carried out by a Mercedes Benz dealer.

However, despite my service history being the other way around (all early services done at a dealer, those in the fifth year done at an independent specialist) MB have recently agreed to repair the damage to my X reg W215 under warranty.

The route I followed was to contact MB Customer service, advising them of my problem. They then inquired as to my local dealer, advised them and I took the car in for an inspection. Within a week they had agreed to do the repairs.

I'm still waiting for a workshop slot and not looking forward to driving a forfour for a month though!

Contemplating my next
Just collected my car [2000 E320 CDI Est] this morning after a 'goodwill' rust repair above the rear numberplate.

I do have a full MBSH, but have been waiting since November to book it in though [releatively low on their priority list, but I do believe the wait was more about a coutesy car than an available slot]. A good experience. The MB man said the repair was guaranteed until 2008 which fits JBerks 8 year rule...

Thanks for this - that is really helpful. Next question - do you have a number / e-mail address of the Mercedes Benz Customer Services - am struggling to find the details anywhere!!

Many thanks.

Hi
I have recently purchased a CLK 320 registered in August 1998, there are signs of rust on 3 wings and the boot lid is this likley to be covered by MB warranty.

They are based in Milton Keynes I believe, I will try and find out the details and post here. If you get no joy you could always write to Stuttgart, address on the web and I do believe you can get the F's name from there as well.

Just going through the process on my W210 estate , i had rust on the tailgate , both rear arches , one door frame, both front wheel arches and under both headlamps.

MB inspected the car back in September and agreed to repair all under warranty but wanted me to pay for one new wing (£180sih plus vat) as there was a small dent in it .

This grated me a little as i had already offered to pay for the bonnet to be resprayed at my cost as i was sure they wouldnt be able to match it very well (as it turns out they havent matched it well at all) and i didnt feel i needed a new wing , just the rust repaired i didnt care whether they repaired the dent or not i have lived with it for 4 years.

But i felt i had no choice so authorised repair this warranty claim was now costing ME about £850

Anyhow i waited 2 months for a slot in the bodyshop and the car went in and i was given a gutless Fiesta loan car (left to pay for the insurance myself), the car wasnt ready when they said it would be which cost me even more on the insurance and lo and behold when i collected the car , the wing with the dent hadnt been touched!!

So the car needed to be booked in again so another 6 week wait hopefully it will be sorted in Jan.

I have paid for the bonnet and MB have offered to cover the cost of the wing to make up for mucking me around and this time i want them to collect the car , I really dont want to drive their POS loan car especially as it costs me money to insure the thing.

So when its all finished i will probably end up having to have the front bumper resprayed as the paint match stands out so much.

But what can you do , if you get anyone else to do the bodywork repairs you lose the warranty??

Hi steve_h

My 'W reg.', C230K received the full wheel arch treatment at the beginning of the year - under warranty. No mention of Mobilo. All I had to prove was that my car had been regularly serviced, even if that involved an indie. Easy!

Not sure I would have received the same attention if my car had been a year or two older. In every other respect it was in A1 condition, and still is.

I have seen a 'W reg' E-class Estate in dreadful condition but this, too, was repaired under warranty, including the fitment of several new body panels and a whole body respray. It was heart-breaking to see it in its original condition with the wings disintegrating at the touch of ones fingers.

To throw my tuppence into the ring.

Got my W Reg E320 (W210) back. Repaired all four arches, replaced two rear doors and repaired the boot over the plate.

Annoyingly after putting it all back together again the rear doors don't shut as well. I'm hoping the rubbers will bed in after a week or two. In fact, they didn't even bolt the restraining strap (metal bit that locks the door in various spots in its opening arc) on properly - it was possible to tighten it better by hand. They also managed to disconnect a reversing light. All of that sorted now though pending a couple of weeks break in.

Only other quirk was that they called to ask if I'd like the various other scratches and dents taken out while they were re-spraying. So for £150+VAT I've had the whole bodywork (minus some scratches on the bumpers) back to showroom condition. Can't complain about that :)

it costs me money to insure the thing.

Who are you insured with? My last two insurers had no problem insuring me on a lower insurance class vehicle for free (prudential and direct line I think) for a week or two.

I found exactly the same thing, it does very much depend upon your insurance company. Some have no issue, others charge quite a lot it is worth checking when you renew your policy really. I had a good deal last year on insurance it then cost me £21 every time I made a change to the policy. I wasn't expecting any changes however I changed the number plate on my W210 then bought the W211 then put the number plate onto the W211 £63 they wanted for all that plus the slight difference for insuring the W211.

Hi Kallisti

Yes,it makes sense to have other minor repairs undertaken at the same time. It's a great feeling picking up the car after the work has been completed and it looks like new. I also formed the impression the car appreciated the tidy-up too, it seemed to drive better and run sweeter than when I took it to the bodyshop. But after a week with a Cleo Campus any other car would feel better.
