hello
anybody can tell me whether this engine (in a W210) has an timing belt or chain? and when would it need replacement?

All merc engines have duplex chains - shouldn't need attention for a couple of hundred thousand miles and it should get noisy first.

The E320 cdi engine is good. Its the ancillaries are the problem. Things with engine are the MAF and glowplugs. Glowplugs life 50-65k, not a diy job, they can break and leave you in trouble. MAF cuts power.

Things to check...air con, ABS/ESP pump, transmission, drop links [cheap, they cause knocks], window regulators, rust on doors and wings, rear suspension if its an estate, rear seat folding down mechanism if an estate.

thx for that Olaf. will keep you all informed what it is gonna be. most probably a W210 from 2001-ish. unfortunately buying a house in no cheap business these days!!!
