I had the IL6 engine in my W210 E320 CDI and loved it.

Yes I read your cost analysis and it looks very satisfactory,
I am moving up from a E220cdi so expect heavier running costs.

I too moved from E220cdi to E211 E320cdi. Fuel costs are well up but performance makes up for it. The 320 kicks ass!

It depends a lot on how you drive, the 320 is such fun that you can be forgiven for planting your right foot in the carpet occasionally* I've noticed with quite a few Mercedes that the smaller engined ones have to work quite hard at times which is why they don't always give the economy benefits. If you drive the 320 sensibly then you can have your cake and eat it :p

*only to exit junctions cleanly and up to a safe speed within the national speed limits ;):D

Dead right Blobcat

we had a 175mile mainly motorway run yesterday, light traffic, easy to adjust to, legal limit and its environs, average speed 53 mph, consumption 42.2 mpg. No way did we feel we were just tickling it along to eke out the fuel, we were belting along with the best of them.

That is very good..who would complain about 42 plus or minus to the gallon...my e220cdi pulled well but also as Blobcat explained there are times when that engine was under pressure...
It seems to me that with the E320 cdi there is a balance between both worlds, economy and power and that makes for the perfect motor car (in my opinion)
I used to think I had the perfect vehicle in the E220CDI and in many respects I did...I still admire the car......now I look forward to moving through the ranks.......and driving the E320 CDI what a good looker.........

42mpg from a 320cdi. I get 38mpg average from my 220cdi. I do get the feeling the car works fairly hard just to haul the car upto speed.

It turns in quickly though and corners well, I'll be interested to hear whether the E class with the hevier engine will be as good to drive.

to be fair, yesterday was a glorious driving day

on the M62 and the M6 at the times we were on it. We did a similar length trip at the weekend down the M1 and back and we only saw 40.1 mpg and 48 mph average.

I bought my W211 E320CDI estate in December 2007. Since then 32mpg over mixed Urban/Motorway driving. If I drive deliberately economically on the motorway, I can get 40mpg over a 120 mile trip. But the power is superb. My previous was an E240 which was very unresponsive - before that I had a W124 TE300-24valve. I think the E320CDI would beat the 300-24 any day.

Tha MPG has to be considered impressive.

Slightly off topic...does the 320 have galvanised body parts if so we can expect less potential for oxidation.

Yes, however from 2004 onwards I believe, Hawk knows the exact dates.
