E320CE cutting out intermittently

My E320CE has an annoying problem of cutting out without any regular pattern. It has been to the garage frequently over the last year and cost me a fortune. I have detected that when it has cut out it will not restart until I can hear a very light clicking noise which comes from an ecu type box in the passenger floorwell. I have removed the cover from this and have seen that there are no removable relays in here (I assume it is the one with the capacitor attached to it?). Do I need to replace this ecu box or is it a common fault that can be easily repaired. The frequency of the cutting out is irregular and sometimes it will restart within a minute and other times it will take 10 mins. Desperate!! Can anybody help me?

The only box I know of in the passenger footwell that could do this is the rare ATA Anti Theft system. If this fails or goes intermittent it can be bypassed. From your description, though, it doesn't sound like ATA

Have you found out what this box is? Have the people "fixing" this problem for you and charging you "a fortune" got any idea what they're doing?

Why don't you read the part number and ask a dealer what the box does?

I think Like nick that the clicking is the alarm isolating the starter, bypass it.

does the starter motor work or is it non functional in the fault condition

Thanks for your replies guys. The starter does turn but the engine does not fire. I will get hold of the dealer and see what this box is.
