Hi: my 66 plate E220d cabriolet has been written off in a low speed (sub 5 mph) collision. As a possible replacement i have found a 29750 mile 66 plate cabriolet in nice condition. Two questions:

When started today from cold (11 degrees temperature at aound midday) the exhausts exhibited a little bit of clear steam when the accelerator was blipped. Further, after ticking over for ten minutes and again blipping the accelerator there was as above a little steam at each tail pipe. Is this normal - the car had not run for a few days?

Secondly, what is the real overall mpg for this engine. My e220d did high forties most of the time. Opinions seem to vary as to fuel efficiency for the e350d cabriolet. Grateful for any advice based on experience.

Thanks and regards
Steve

MPG might be the least of your problems, ADBLUE, Nox sensors and all the other emissions kit can be problematic on EU6 cars unless you do a high mileage. Have you thought about a petrol cabriolet E400 or E53 if you don’t do many miles

I do about 15000 miles a year of which 12000 is in the daily car which wasa n E220d. Used to do 25000 miles a year, year in year out in my MG ZT.

If mpg is a factor you might be better looking at the E220d my son’s 16 plate W213 E220d returned a solid 50 commuting and the OM654 is a good engine if maintained properly, his yearly mileage was 15k. The 350d is obviously more powerful but you won’t see much over 40 commuting.

Hope this helps!

I had an E220D cabriolet which wsas really nice but for its recent collision. Lowish mileaget E220d vehicles always seem to be a long way away from home. I want something sub 30k from late 2016 / early 2017 - ideally a premium model. That said, E350d veheicles are acceptable if i can get an average of 40 mpg - be quite happy with that.

One other query, i have seen a nice 2016 (66 plate) E350d and have a query. On start up yesterday from cold there was a little steam / condense from the exhaust which did not clear after ten minutes idling. Only apparent really when throttle blipped. Any issue or is this normal? Thanks

As regards the E350d MB have the best cars and a solid 1 year warranty so I’d look there first, they keep the best and send the rest to auction. I’ve just bought an E53 from MB Hull with a two year MB warranty, very pleased with the car and the prep work done for sale

Ps if you have any reservations about the car my policy is walk away

I would expect mid 40's on a run and 30-35 round town

A bit of steam after start-up is usual for most motors - noticed more in cooler weather of course. I get it in both of mine but it soon disappears. I'd expect it to clear when the engine is warm. If not, I'd be checking things like HG failure. But if you're concerned as per Malcolm says, walk away and find another one to test. Also on that model, make sure you check the roof cords are sound - they can fray, break and snap.

Hi

Looking at the cars in your ownership I'm surprised your asking about economy :)

It is because this would be my daily car and hence rack up 12-15k miles per annum. Either way i think i have decided to get another E220d cabriolet. On that point does anyone know what is in an A and B service and what is the intval period? Thanks Steve

A and B services alternate every year.

From what I understand, Service A is basically an oil + filter change and a visual inspection (fluids, brakes etc.)
Service B adds a brake fluid flush and an underside inspection (suspension components, brake lines etc.), with fuel and air filter change every 2nd B service.

Then there are additional vehicle items depending on the model and options, and an optional "Plus Package" (if you want to pay dealer rates to top up the windscreen washer fluid!). The ASSYST computer gives a code - I think in the hidden menu - that gives a detailed list for your car when used with the Mercedes software, but there is also this website that gives you a more general list for any model:
