Hi I have a 1995 E36 with cruise control, it works well, very smooth, however above a certain speed or if the engine is working a bit harder up a hill, the cruise control simple "slips off". It feels like it has just switched itself off.

I can use resume and the engine will work it's way easily back to the preset then switch off agin.

Any idea's?

I have a spare control unit

005 545 0532 412/1/1, with no code plug. It came from a w124 300TD.
I have it on the parts for sale at £35. I bought it to replace the faulty? unit on my SL, but as it produces exactly the same symptoms, my SL unit can't be faulty, it must be the linkage or speed/impulse giver which is giving me trouble.

Have a look at your tyres!!! Are they different sizes between left and right?
Is there less tread on one side?
If there is even a slight difference in rolling circumference (>2%), the cruise control will switch off at around 100k/h.

Cruise does switch off of most cars when ascending steep hills, to save the engine labouring. But it shouldn't switch off above certain speeds ...
