Just had a go in a e420 c.d.i. that a foreign guy i work with brought over with him and i wanner know why we dont have them over here! The steering wheel was on the wrong side but what a nice car to drive the diesel v8 was really nice engine . Do we brits only get the 420 c.d.i engine in the ml or gl ? Is this due to tax reasons why we dont get the 420 ? I want one now but dont want a left hand drive car .

Probably not imported into the UK so that they don't show the Astons and Jags up. Seriously though, I imagine the MB marketing dept feel that there wouldn't be enough demand and that the margins are much better on the petrol V8s.

A diesel V8 E class would also probably embarras an E55

Yummy - sounds as though it might do well as an SL?

yeah was fairly quick and made a nice noise. They sold plenty of 4 litre audi a8's over here seen a few of those about and even 5 litre v10 vw tourags and phaeton's so its a shame that they dont do the e420 c.d.i. over here. Dont think much of the new shape e class though thats coming out soon bet thats gonner be beaten by bmw when they bring out their new 5 series :(

0.2 secs quicker 0-60 than the E320CDI and both limited to 155mph so that and the higher price we pay for diesel over here is probably some of the reasons that we don't get it. It is also ~5mpg worse than the 320CDI. Having said that if it was available over I would probably have one.

It would be quicker through its mid range, although a 320cdi is hardly slow in this regard.

Its peak power is slightly higher than a 350, but less than a 500, and it probably uses just as much fuel so would say the 350/500 petrol cars would render it slightly redundant as their economy is about the same, as is their performance

However in the heavier S class it would be more suitable,

I think that its available in the S class as well, but certainly it would be interesting to see in an E.

However, if it's economy is only on par with the V8 petrol then there's not going to be any demand over here. If the price differerential between petrol and diesel oil was on par to the continent then it would be a totally different story.
