Looking for a nice daily - any experience gents between the 43 and 53 - it will be the W222 generation somewhere between a 2017 and 2020 car.

Any thoughts - is there a clear better car out of the 2...

Am looking at Saloon and on an Approved Used programme to ensure I get a MB warranty at least for the first year (can it be extended like BMW allow at the end of each year?)

Not sure they did a 43 and 53 in the W222, S class? :)

I don’t think the AMG 53 M256 IL6 engine has been fitted in the S class.

Both engines are fitted to the 213 series E class and the AMG 43 M276 engine is fitted in the C class

This is the dilemma I’m currently looking at either to buy an E43 or E53. Both have more than enough power for our congested roads, the E43 appeals due to the twin turbo V6 petrol engine being the last conventional engine MB will manufacture so much easier to maintain and potentially more reliable to own long term. I’m a big fan of IL6 engines so I’d really like the E53 the only thing holding me back is the added complexity of the starter generator 48V hybrid system, if it proves reliable (introduced in 2019) I’ll probably bite the bullet and buy one next year unless a really well looked after E43 turns up (only made 2017-18)

If you intend to take out a MB extended warranty go for the E53 but of course it will be an E class

Anything hybrid and it’s got to be a Lexus, so the E53 is out. Look at all the MB 300 hybrids leaving owners licking their wounds.

Having lived with a 43 engine for nearly five years, I would go for that. Like others, the complexity of a mild hybrid would make me nervous. But neither were fitted to the S Class.

On the warranty question, I assume it can be extended each year. I bought a two year one when my initial three years ran out and I’m planning to extend it again this year,

Thanks for responses - my mistake it should have said W213 E Class, so E43 vs E53

Looks like people are suggesting the E43, already have a Lexus Hybrid and and a V8 in another car, so I guess the E43 fits in a gap in power trains with respect to my cars.

Someone I know had a C43 Convertible and it sounded pretty good probably better than my M car but not as fast - if that is the same engine in the E43 as was in the C43 then I think thats the one I will try to source.

W222 S class didn't use either of those engines. The AMG option was the 63.

They did do the S500 with a conventional 4.7 twin turbo producing 450 BHP and under 5 seconds to 60mph which is more than enough for normal rapid driving.
It doesn't come with some of the AMG toys or the exhaust note but it also doesn't have the pumped up AMG maintenance costs.

It may be of no consequence, but I did read in a magazine somewhere that the 43 AMG engine is only 'engineered by AMG' not hand-built like the V8s...

I have lost the plot with the current range of Mercedes engines. Do they still make AMGs ? What is an AMG any more ? I have tried googling, but I get thousands of random hits, none containing a simple list of models, performance and power/torque numbers. Do Mercedes produce such a thing ?

It used to be so easy.

Yes, not hand-built but tweaked by AMG with specific engine map, gearbox software etc. I take the view that the parts for all engines, hand-built or not are made by machine and, I suspect, those assembled by machine are better than something done by humans. I once read that the ”proper” AMG engines are only hand-built because they don’t make enough of them to use an automated line.

But the old hand built V8s tend to run and run. I looked up our old C43's MOT history and it's still doing several thousand miles a year and was at 158K in January this year. This was what drew us to them back in 2003...

found a nice E43 and will go take a look at the w/end but didnt realise until someone above mentioned that they were only available 2017/8 or something - so they are rare - perhaps they discontinued for a reason (i.e. not a good reason)....if anyone knows I am interested to know, were there problems with the engine or something?

The 43 has been around for a long time but only on the C derivatives. It was introduced to the E, as a budget 63, but then superseded by the 53 (in line 6 with mild hybrid) a couple of years later. The engine is fine.

That is all you need.
Get in a V8 before they are gone forever.

Agree about getting in a v8....but I already have one that is going no where - a pampered and bought from new 2019 F90 M5...

The E was / is going to be a daily driver

Predictable ;)

Think I would get this, not boring and a lovely daily

The E400 in Coupe Guise is the same as an E43 IIRC
