Has anyone come accross this problem before?

My engine has started to cut out, in the last 2 days, when the car is stationary and wont restart immediately. It has done this 3 times now. It has eventually started each time but only with patiently waiting and trying every couple of minutes. From what I can remember I was either in drive or reverse with foot on brake. It did not do it from cold, but when the engine was warm ie ran for more than 10 miles. I have read that a couple of people had a similar problem when car was moving and it was the crank sensor. From what i understand the crank sensor is more when the car is moving and not idling.

I am hoping the fault is stored in the ecu, so I will arranged for that to be checked next week.

Smart + others :)
most probably crank sensor, very heat sensitive when they fail, so at idle your engine temp will rise.

2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
As Star CPS I test them by freezing and placing in hot water 1k ohms when good, open circuit when bad

The crankshaft sensor is used to detect TDC, a necessary requirement for injection and spark timing. Without it your engine will not run, basically the ECU has no idea when to trigger sparks or fuel and so does neither - hence the engine appearing to cut out.

A quick and easy fix, cheaper if you get the part from a Bosch centre, and a common fault with the V6 and V8 engines.
