Is their any test I can do to visualise the fuel injection spray from the injectors while they are all on the fuel rail, to get an indication?

You could try, but you won’t get close to a specialist with an ASNU test bench. They can pressure test and run them through their full duty cycle whilst measuring the fuel spray pattern and output. It’s not even expensive!

I think you should investigate every possible reason for piston failure. It would be hugely annoying to repeat the problem

do they suffer from sticking valves?

maybe after one hard run it got so hot, it stuck open and had a meeting with the piston?

can you swap out a single valve or is the head bin material? and if it needs a valve it will need a guide

Just waiting on key parts from main dealer so I can get engine reassembled to at least be able to check cold compression across all the cylinders, providing these results are good, I will order more parts from Benz to get the engine fully assembled and back in the car. May as well change various seals now that the engine is out of the car, it's actually a pleasure to work on out of the car. I'm also giving the engine and the engine bay a really good clean.

Once engine is back in car I will check the fuel pressure drop across all the injectors before start-up. I'm also going to wire in an oil pressure gauge.

Sadly company dissolved only last month! Real shame as good 'go to' guys nice and local to me (about 2 miles from my factory). Not sure what the guys are doing now if anything

Cold compression tests completed, two low cylinder results on opposite head, both reading ~90 PSI.

Decided to strip down and found piston ring lands failed on two more pistons, looks like early stages of main piston failure. I also noted that the pistons rings on these two cylinders where aligned on the same part of the piston.

I'm wondering if the failure mode is still likely to be the program in the ECU OR if it could be due to the position of the upper and middle pistons rings being aligned.

Would welcome feed back.

Update:

Replaced 3 damaged pistons, 1 bent exhaust valve and physically removed blockage in secondary CATS.

I'm amazed at how this car drives without any hesitation and the power is just awesome!!
