My E55 W211 06 18K, had a problem yesterday afternoon, trundlerling along at 70mph literally, sudden violent vibration, (thought a tyre had blown initially), and lack of power, and when coming to roundabouts/traffic lights engine very lumpy, virtually stalling, no computor messages, only engine management light up. MB Eastbourne, telling me its possibly ignition leads, I am doubting this, but I have technical car knowledge of a doughnut! could leads break down and cause such problems so quickly? Thought this sort of thing happened to Austin 1100/1300s and Triumphs Dolimites. Anyone got any comments to what this may be. Thanks.

Leads? Nah. I'm assuming the 55 is a twin spark like the other models in which case, one lead failing wouldn't be noticable, especially on a V8 (it was subtle on a V6 and didn't give that much trouble).
That said, what you describe is similar to what happens when the engine goes into safe mode after the MAS fails. If so, it's a simple fix and nothing to worry about.

Thanks for that, Mr shr yes warrenty still in place so cost not really an issure, just aggrivation of being off the road.

Thanks Jberks, after my initial post MB rang to say, not leads, but suspect electrical problem, and they are still searching. Does this electrical item fall into the MAS failure area. Really weird it happened so fast, 1 minute fine, next big violent vibration, and no power. I ve experienced limp home mode before on my old w210 240 I had, but without this lumpy engine, thinking kompressor/engine gone. thanks.

And only 100 pounds per hour to come up with such a detailed analysis

Seriously, glad you're not forking out for this cos sounds like the Stealership are racking up the hours.

I'm sure I've read that MAF fault doesn't show up on STAR but surely they would have ruled that out as one of their first tests? After all, it's a common failing point.
Might be worth just asking if they've tested the MAF.

Correct the MAF does not show up on STAR so easy to unplug it,,saying this the MAF will not put the engine lamp on

Supercharged E55 doesn't have a MAF sensor. The fuel load is calculated from a MAP sensor - completely different device. I bow to superior knowledge, but when my aux air pump packed up there was no difference in power or the smoothness of the engine. I would be suspecting a cylinder cut scenario, but it is pure speculation, looking from here...

Still in MB Eastbounre Dave, apparently they have spent 6 hours on it, not found the fault yet, and now the enginner who has been working on it, is on holiday till Thurday, so at best, wont find out till later part of week.
Its Ironic really because it actually broke down on the way back from MB Brighton, where I had been looking a PX for a C63, think my 55 has got a little upset over this! and trying to tell me something.
Will post the MB findings when I get the car back.

Just thought I would update everyone on my unwell 55. Apparently they (Eastbourne MB) fitted a new control box, what ever that is, made no difference at all! But as quoted, " the engineer test drove the car for a good 20 miles" and the fault has cleared itself, and the car is running fine again apparently. The customer service guy then asked to whether I drive the car hard, and I have to say, not in recent weeks. His and the enginners conclusion is, the engine is coked up, and needs to be driven harder to clear it, to which his service engineer has apparently done, and the car is now fine, and he will get it delivered it back to me. Albeit at this time the cars not back with me. What do you guys make of that, could me dawdling along to much, cause such a problem?
The stories not finished, on getting home at 5.30pm, no car on drive, leaving that a bit late I am thinking, only to find Sussex Police on the answer phone, asking why my car is parked on some womans drive with the keys in her letter box, and she cannot get her car out of her garage. Ring Police and ring Eastbourne MB, to explain, and its being dealt with as we speak.
Do I have to drive my car harder to stop this problem reacurring, or is this said preception of the cause not right! Thanks

Sounds like a right fob off to me.
And you were just kidding about delivering to the wrong address, weren't you? That was just you using very clever humour that I'm not smart enough to understand, right?

Helen, you,ve got your own , girl. You can't have them all:

Mr Shr, no joke definitely delivered to another house, cw keys in someone elses letter box. Very fortunate that part of Eastbourne is quiet civilised, well hope it is! Its back were it belongs now, but haven't driven it yet, hope thats not going to be another story.

Surely they need to sign the keys over to the owner or something? I take it you wont be using this Dealership again?

Are you not curious to know that your car is now tip top? When you do get to test it, let us know how you get on.
