Evening all

you probably all know this but thought would share recent experience.

have a 2016 E63 estate (love it) and had a misfire issue the other day. Misfire, engine warning light so pulled over, luckily next to a pub and waited for the RAC.

coil pack 3 issue and RAC lovely man removed and cleaned and reset faults and off I popped home.

sadly didn’t have my OBD scanner with me so had to wait for RAC to confirm coil pack.

now OBD scanner in the car (£120 odd and bought to test for faults when I was buying the car).

nice thing is I had same coil pack 3 issue today but plugged in the OBD scanner, cleared the faults and off I went on my merry way.

obviously have two coil packs on way to me so can stash in glove box if future issues.

but nice the OBD clear faults option would get me home and thought would share as you need one of these things in your car.

I never realised it was a potential get you home tool. Modern cars. Turn it off and back on again…

Update from me. Changed coil pack 3 for a new one (made by Beru).

No issues then for a couple of weeks including 5 hour drive to holiday, 4 days driving around and then another 5 hour drive back home.

Today coil pack 3 has failed again but now if I reset I may be lucky and get 30 mins or it immediately fails as has just happened now after a fault code reset.

Any ideas? Faulty new coil pack maybe? I have one spare so was going to swap it in tomorrow

Fault reads “the actuator of ignition coil 3 has an electrical fault or open circuit. There is an open circuit”

Thank you.

Did you have a look at the spark plug at all?

Not yet but will take a look when go for the coil pack. Could that cause a coil pack fault code?

Thank you!

It could, but what it’s interpreted as depends on the particular scanner. I certainly wouldn’t be panicking about the coil pack until I’d had a look at the spark plug. You can swap it with another cylinder to eliminate it

Update. Spark plug changed. Looked like it had some build up on it.

Plan is maybe to get a Merc coil pack to hopefully put the issue to bed but new spark plug in and will take for a long drive tomorrow. Thanks Uncle B

Long drive today with new plug and no coil pack misfire or OBD faults.

So looks like a coil pack fault on an OBD test can actually point at a broken spark plug.

Thank you for the tip Uncle Benz, appreciated.

It has often been said that the diagnostic test result is useless without the experience to interpret it. That’s where Indies like @Uncle Benz are so much better than dealer techs who just follow the “computer says” route.

Very true buddy , I can do a lot more damage with a diagnostic code reader than without one

Evening all

So the saga continues. Worked well with the new plug for a week or so and then the same coil pack 3 issue as per photo attached (The audio faults are because I’ve fitted an Apple Car play unit).

In desperation I went to Mercedes and acquired a coil pack from them (Borg Warner is OEM and I had Beru ones).

Fitted and again all ok for a week or so and then same coil pack 3 issue. Happens when car just warms up (72 degrees C, 4 miles, 12 minutes). I OBD reset and then works for the rest of the drive and return back.

Any more clever ideas of what to look for. It’s about to go to a Merc specialist on 4th July for diagnostics under MotorEasy warranty. Would love it fixed quicker if possible.

Many thanks.
Dominic

Front right cylinder as you stand in front of the car looking at it? Cylinder layout below. I was changing 2. And not 3. as everyone was telling me cylinder numbering crossed over

1. 2. 3. 4.

5. 6. 7. 8.

Interesting thread glad you’ve finally found the issue, always amazes me that the cylinder numbers aren’t identified on the engine even racing teams have the same issues I remember watching a TV programme about a racing team doing exactly the same as you did but they’d ripped off all the plug leads in haste and couldn’t get them back on the right cylinders - in this case it may have been a V12
