Just about to change my tyres and have thought about getting the Goodyear Eagle F1's on my CLK 430 avantgarde that I had on my last Mercedes.

I have always had excellent wet/dry grip, low road noise and pretty good wear with the Eagle F1's but there is always room for improvement. The F1's do look a great tyre also.

Are the Michelins Pilots or Pirelli P zeros a better bet?

I'm on conti's at present but shall be going back to zero's next time. I swear by them, good grip (critical in mine) and hard wearing 25K miles easly.

mmmmmmm!! yes I know what you mean, I had them a few years back on my M5 and the grip was sensational. I then swapped the M5 for a Toyota Twin Turbo which had brand new F1's fitted and these too were awesome. I've always wondered if the tyre choice is dependant on the type of car, the driving style and the set-up of the car, to be truly effective?

I had F1's on my old C180 and thought they were atrocious in the wet, on 2 occassions I had brown trouser moments when the back end swung completely around while exiting a roundabout.

On my E430 I've had Bridgestone S-02s, which give phenominal grip in the wet, but I managed to get through the back ones in 12k miles. The S-03 are meant to last longer.

It's horses for courses on tyres. As wear is a big factor I'm currently running on Michelin Pilot Primacy. They seem a good compromise between grip and wear, although they're not too hot in snow but still better than some that I could mention.

Have a look at the mytyres.co.uk website (good prices too). Most of the tyres have a link to the German ratings which give a good idea on the various comparitive qualities. On my last lot on my W210 I moved from F1's to SP Sport which had a better rating and was not disappointed.

I am on F1's on my C43. Had them on the last one too. Although for some reason this time round they tramlined quite a lot until I had done about 1000 miles. Fine now.

The guy who runs the tyre fitters runs an E55 and swears by Dunlops (not sure which ones). The owner of my previous C43 has now gone for Dunlops and says he's very happy with them.

I have also had F1's on my 500Sl, found them to tramline ,difficult to get balanced and not very good in the wet so I wouldn't buy again. Other people have different experiences with them but that is the same with most tyres. I often think that sticking with OEM is probably the easiest option they are expensive items to be experimenting with.

I run Eagle F1's on my Porsche and find them to be the optimal choice. I'm more than little surprised by gfern's experience. The F1's are superb in the wet although the concensus seems to be that SO2's are a bit grippier in the dry. The wet performance was the prime reason for using them. I intend to change mine to F1's when the existing rubbish wears out.

I've also found them ok on the track although clearly no where near a good as proper tack rubber. My second choice woule be Michelin Pilot Sport.

Michelin Pilot Primacy (MO). Very good grip in the dry and very capable in the wet. Tend to tramline a bit but last well ~25K Plus, the MO variety have rim protectors, useful

I like the F1's once they are warmed up, but in cold weather find it takes 3 or 4 miles to get them round never mind warm, must say once warm excellent wet or dry. Rears wont last long cos Georgeous spins em most cold starts!!
