I have a 1990 300SL (R129) in nautical blue. It has the grey bumpers and door skirts. I can find the paint info for the blue but can't find any info on the grey. Does anyone know anything about this?

try this

It may help is you type in your VIN number on this Russian reference site it gives you all the build codes for your car including paint number. If you are not sure which is which you can post it up here and someone will help ;)

If you pull off a trim panel it should have the code written behind it.

My under standing of these plasitic panels is that before 1991 they came in primer and you had to paint your self as I had to. After that date they came ready painted. That upset me as the cost of the paint and adatives was more than £140 back then, plus all of the mess

I think that I still have a tin with the part number on it for the grey blue.

I've not heard of that before - as far as I'm aware the two-tone bodywork was standard until 1994.

Yes you are correct stats, two tone bodywork was standard then, but the replacement panels did not come from the factory painted back then.

I still have many jigs and tools with the grey blue dust on them, having no oven I had to use a lamp.

I had a hard time finding the colour when I did mine.

I think the best bet is to drop in to a body shop where they have the sample books, there are not many so you should not get it wrong.

i had a similar experience on my w124 last year after i needed to replace the front bumper after a little "bump"

the car is brill silver (another silver merc) and the panels, such as bumber and door skirts were a darker grey.

I went to the dealers to ask them for the paint colour of the trim as the paint colour of the car was easy to find.

Anyway they gave me a paint number that no paint shop knew about, i asked 3 times and always the same scenario.

In the end, the spray guy matched it up prefectly.

Advice: ask a dealer - give them the vin, maybe they can be more helpful

Ah, replacements always come primed - even now only interior trim etc is colour-coded as a part.

Thank you stats again, interesting the things like the door mirrors come painted, they did for my 99, think thats about all though.

I am still reeling at the differences on your car,its hard to believe that so many changes for such a few cars, the tooling cost must have been horific.

I suppose door mirror covers are a popular item to stock! They do vary in price depending on the colour.

I have a spare set of mirror covers and some clear front blinkers and a 129 telephone model, also some sales books mint for 1999 and 2000. Must take some pics and put on the for sale section.

eBay is always a good place for this sort of thing.

Back to the colour code - if you know the outside paint code I (or any Mercedes Dealer for that matter) can look up the exterior panel colour.
