Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
Bulbs and LEDs will both work happily from 12V. They've probably just found an LED that has an identical fitting to the normal bulbs.

Make sure they're connected polarity correct.

Theres also a good chance that the light across the binnacle will be distributed less evenly, LEDs aren't as omnidirectional a light source as incandescent bulbs.

But are they difficult to fit? Do I have to pull anything out or to bits or.......?

I think the question is, are they something that I can just pop in or is a mechanic required?

You will have to pull the dash cluster out. The lighting in your car has been engineered with the current bulbs in mind .Leds will give a different light .Could even be too bright. Only trial and error will tell. I tried some leds bulbs in the rear taillight lamp assemblies and found that they were inferior to normal bulbs in the W202 lamp assemblies. You can only try. You will have to undo the bottom of dash to push the instrument cluster from behind to get to the bulbs. You might want to buy one for your cigarette lighter accessory to try out first before you go to all the trouble.

You don't have to undo the dash - though some people find it easier. You can buy the cluster removal keys from MB for £10 and pull it out - though be gentle and work each side slowly.

To be honest I wouldn't bother. If you're looking at these sort of mods I'd say the appeal of the car has been lost somewhere along the line.

Maybe a Saxo is more your thing?;)

To get to the 3 main lamps on a 129 the instrument cluster has to be split as the pic

To be honest, if that's the case, I won't be bothering. I thought it might be easier than that, and I did like the look of the blue cluster lights in my GTi.

MMMMMMMMMMMM, Saxo eh? Would that be the VTS or a little 1.1 to keep the insurance costs down?

It's a ten-minute job to swap them - the brightness can be adjusted anyway so if you really want to do it it isn't a problem.

1.1 might be the way to go ;).
