Idiot calling:

Despite some advice on this forum to stick with my factory fit 15" wheels I'm determined to find some 17" alloys.

Looking at other estates with the bigger wheels has just made me soo envious

I know the ride will suffer but maybe I will get used to it, or if not I'll just sell the new wheels and at least understand why I've reverted to a sad set of 15"'s.

So being a non techie how on earth do I know what wheels will fit my W203.

Right now there are some cheap "255/45/17"s on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mercedes-17-O...oryZ9888QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Would they do???!!!!

Any advice you guys could share would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Jon

Those wheels are standard R230, with ET35, check your car for ET number.

You cannot use the same tyres, and you would have to drop down to a 225-235 x 35-40 tyre.

Thanks Blobcat & Malcolm,

So I guess I now I understand the 17" thing and also the other meaningless measurement of 225/45.

I'm just clueless about this "offset" thing which seems to vary from 35 to 37", e.g.

17x7.5 35 225/45R17 AMG alloy wheels
17x7.5 36 225/45R17 Mercedes alloy wheels
17x7.5 37 225/45R17 Mercedes alloy wheels/AMG alloy wheels
17x7.5 36 225/45R17 17x8.5 30 245/40R17 Mercedes alloy wheels
17x7.5 36 225/45R17 17x8.5 34 245/40R17 Mercedes alloy wheels
17x7.5 37 225/45R17 17x8.5 30 245/40R17 Mercedes alloy wheels/AMG alloy wheels
17x7.5 35 225/45R17 17x8.5 30 245/40R17 AMG alloy wheels

Is it related to the age of my car, or is it my choice? My preference would be for whatever 17" size would limit the road noise (as to be honest I'm only buying the bigger wheels to make the car look good!)

Oh well, it just seems too much like hard work!

If your car uses an offset of 35-37 then those wheels are ok, but as said not the tyres. those wheels normally sell around £300-500 depending on the tyres,so they are cheap.
