ah ebay

Good point Malcolm. An honourable buyer is just that, regardless of their history. I'd make sure you let them know that the car is going nowhere until the cheque or banker's draft is in your account and cleared, or that pay-pal have credited you with the amount. E-bay's advice to sellers is pretty good, and you could always contact your bank for their advice.
Just don't accept folding money, and make sure someone you know knows when and where you are meeting with prospective buyers etc.
Common sense really.

The points system is all about trust. Anyone can signup to Ebay, just like this forum, wether they are of good intention or not.

You've got experience from the trade, so if they ring you, use your best judgement to decide wether they are 'fly by nights' or genuine. Most are genuine, as most people have to start from 0 points, but you get the oddball or dodgy one. I personally have encountered few problems, but a mate who's a power seller has had a few time wasters and con-artists.

Also, because you've not used Ebay much, other Ebayers may suspect you of being 'dodgy', hence the suggestion to link them to this Forum, which will allay any fear they might have had.

Good luck... will check out your Auction tonight. Hope you get top bucks, as its going to be one of the best buys for anyone who wants an SL.

Thank you Psmart, there are lots of SL's out there, and of coarse you never know what many of them sell for, Glasses give it £14 to 15k but then mine is over the top of a normal one. I have a local man who has offered 15k. I was offered 14.5k from an MB dealer in PX for a 2002 500 with 39k, but it was loaded. Biggest problem there is that mine has only been the same miles.

buing without a PX I could save £4k + and get a low milage one with 8 to 20k,also chose the car that I want, at my current rate of miles,it would see me out.

I wish I had known you were selling your SL Malcolm, as would have bought yours rather than the one I did get off e-bay. Although i am very happy with it.

Are you going to go for a 350 or a 500?

That is the hardest question of all. My SL320 is very lively and for what it is and the way I use cars, its good in my own veiw. My V70R does 0-60 in 6.9 sec, the 320 is around 7.7. the New 500 takes 6.1 and that is the same as the 129, 500. However the 350 does it in 7.2 and the new engine version is faster than that, 6 something to 60. My test drive in the new 500 felt slow, nothing happened when I kicked it down, well not that much. the one thing I did like was the air suspension, standard on the 500, but extra on the 350 and there are not many around with this option, I know that I could say that I would be £3000 better off, if it went wrong, but I cant look at things that way, I would rather haver everything.
I know that the 500 owners will come on, and in my case the difference in driving cost would be no more than £175 on fuel, and that is max per year. maybe the suspension masked the performance on the test drives that I have had on the 500, I have not tried the 350 yet.

Malcolm

Maybe I am just stupid selling it

set them running seeker

we don't want to see Malcolm short-changed. I hoped he'd have more comeback with the banks on forged cheques and banker's drafts than he would with 9-bob notes made on a kid's printing set. It seems he would not.

I bought our SL with a Bankers draft and drove it away. I did provide my passport, driving licence and employment details to the seller as proof of my bonafides.

When I bought our car on e-bay, the buyer brought it round, we agreed on the sale ( he was a very honourable and honest chap), and then I let him see me pay by pay-pal, and let him confirm it with his other half by phone.

I then ran him to the station in his ex-car.
But I am an honourable sort of chap.

The safest form of payment to accept is by 'direct bank transfer' or 'BACS'....you give the buyer your name, bank sort code and account number....(all of this information is on a cheque)....and they transfer the payment directly into your account.

Thanks rob, Yes I can still count and I don't mind readies, I do have a bank note tester, a bankers draft is OK from one of our big banks, though I do have a Pay Pal account I do not think that I would use that.

Regarding anyone ringing you...........Ask them for contact details, landline, address, etc and confirm this by calling them back on the landline.....they will give this information freely if they are genuine!

Paypal is good for accepting a deposit immediately at end of auction....balance of payment by cash or bacs.
Good luck.

If I were contacted by a potential buyer with low rating, I think I would try and do the following. First get his phone number, and insist on calling him back on it, to make sure that it's correct. Then if you have enough time left on the auction, take his name and address and send him a 'password' in the post, and ask him to ring you back with the password.

That way you at least know where he (or someone he knows if he's giving a false address) lives. Can't do any harm - may make him or her think twice before doing anything silly!

if someone tells you that they will pay by BACS you MUST check with your bank that the money has gone in electronically. People can tell you the payment is by BACS but then pay in a dodgy cheque over the bank counter with a paying in slip - result if you check with your bank and just ask if a certain amount of money has gone in then they may only confirm money has gone in and not the method unless you ask !

I bought my 320CE of ebay. I sent the guy a deposit straight away. I then organised the rest of the money. I sent him some updates on the car after that.

He picked me up at the train station and couldn't have been more helpful.

I forgot what my point was now.
