Hello and welcome to the forum,,is your car a 124 or 210, 1996 was a change of model year, with the 124 check the fuse on the OVP relay behind the plastic panel behind the battery
i discovered the same problem after i switched out my heater control box for a newer one. i bought a new brake switch from mb for €22. That didn't help. Checked out all the fuses in all three locations. they all looked good. No brake lights either. Brought it to the dealer. they checked the swtich, ran diagnostics, pulled the wiring diagram for the car and discovered that there was a fuse missing! I must have misplaced it when i was checking an idicator problem after changing the heater controls. That slip up cost me €157.
I still can't make head or tail of the fuse diagram that comes with the car. So my adivce is where ever there is no fuse put a 20amp in there just to be sure
