I have had my 2009 220CLK CDI Coupe for nearly three years from 38000 miles, now done 55000.

The economy has slightly improved, such that 40mpg is achievable on a run to Brum, but locally in town 26ish and 30 outside of town ( Plymouth ).

According to people I have spoken to these figures are poor.

When I had a E320CDI W210 The consumption improved when a new MAF was fitted.

Is this the answer?

Any ideas from you brilliant guys will be welcome.

The car incidentally is GREAT.

I have an E220CDi Bluetec and average just under 37mpg combined. Around town it will be in the 26-28 region, on country roads in the low to mid 30s and on a run just over 40. So just about exactly what you're seeing. Mine is on 12k miles, had it from new.

But your E Class is bigger and much heavier. My wife has a PETROL Clk 200 Kompressor which achieves almost 40mpg on a good run and averages 33mpg over time. It gets about 26 - 28mpg around town.

I drive a C Class 220CDi which is pretty much the same weight and size as the CLK and I got upwards of 52mpg on a 60 mile run on mixed roads down the A9, M90 then onto B roads at the weekend. On a day to day 70 mile round trip to work I'm looking at between 48 and 50mpg at normal speeds.

I assume that by asking about economy, you're not driving like James Bond with the villain on your tail.

Not really it isn't, there's just under 200kg more for the W212 vs the W209. Appreciable but not a massive difference.

But how old is it? Is it BE and is it 7g?

I agree that clk220cdi should be better , my clk200 and E320cdi both achieve better figures than that on a run . Not sure what you could do though to improve figures once you have changed air/fuel filter and cleaned the maf ..... Does the cars engine temp get up to 90 degrees , maybe a thermostat issue that affects mpg???

Depends on the terrain, the driver and the normal road/traffic conditions.

I have got just over 50mpg from each of my four 220cdi's over the years, all C-classes with the 5g box, on a long run - but averaging out at just over 43mpg overall.

My current S204 with the same engine/box gives 42mpg average, and I struggle to get 50mpg on any long run.

Economy CLK220CDI

Well guys, the car is main dealer serviced, long distance cruised on M way at *80mph where economy seems to kick in, and little acceleration in Urban situations. It is the 5g box and drives beautifuully.

S devon and indeed Plymouth is hilly and twisty so perhaps, not so outrageous but a 250 CDI based here gives 50+mpg on a run consitanly I am told, That has 88000 miles on the clock.

So at 550000 am I not yet run in?

Interestin so far guys...Thanks

Phil

At 550000 miles it is well run in :D . Not economy related but if you bourght at 38000 miles, that was when it was due gearbox ATF and filter change , if it's not had one yet you are overdue .

Used to have a C63...
As you say, Plymouth is all hills & twists. And traffic lights!

My W203 C220 would consistently nudge 45 mpg at those sorts of speeds on a run... Especially once beyond Haldon Hill (eastbound).

Does the temp gauge hit 90 quickly & maintain it?

As above, double check ATF change too.

I can always take you out in mine... then you'll instantly feel better about your mpg!

I'm not sure about CLK CDIs but E-class in U.S. have swirl flaps built into 1 of 2 intake ports for each cylinder, servo-adjusted by CDI3. My mileage began to decrease sharply recently when that servo's link bar galled out & dropped off it's ball & socket fitting & left flaps to remain in a closed position. The only symptom engine exhibited from this was a wandering idle but only on cold starts. I originally theorized injector issues & replaced with new 3 that were in need so money well spent but when it didn't correct wandering idle I began to probe deeper to find the disconnect. Once discovered, I fixed the link bar to hold flaps fully open. Rough cold starts disappeared & fuel mileage has returned as well.

Are all tyres pressures correct? (a cheap fix)

Also, some tyres are better on fuel than others (apparently....)

Stop start around a hilly town is a killer though, but up the M5 at no more than 80, I would have expected close to 50. My old c220cdi c class coupe did 55 on a decent run, high 30s around town

Tyre pressures are a very good call. That can wash out 5mpg without even trying.

On tyre models vs fuel efficiency though, this is what Blackcircles has to say:

Putting the scores into perspective, if fitting the worst scoring tyres in this category, you could end up using 6 litres more fuel every 625 miles than if you fitted 'A' rated tyres - so, potentially, 'A' rated tyres could save you enough in fuel bills to buy a new set of tyres!

The maximum difference covered by the ratings is therefore just under one litre every 100 miles, which works out fairly closely to one gallon per full tank. Nice to have, but nowhere near as significant (20%!!!) that some OEMs claim. Unless the car has a 5 gallon tank :D

Mine did too, My 350CDi does over 45 on that run so it makes me happy (It also obliterates most things going up Haldon hill ;-) )

Off topic, but my remapped Saab liked Haldon / Telegraph as well....as did the RV mirror as it always seemed to fill up with cars 'having a go'

Back on topic, tyre pressures were suggested as a quite likely; the fuel effect of some tyres vs others = tongue in cheek.....

I keep my pressures 2psi under recommended, they wear more evenly

I get similar mpg on a 320CDI, but there are too many factors involved to compare...

Mmmm tyres it could be, I have new Michelins on all round at 30 psi, but consumption about the same as with old tyres, (Continentals )

Will re check tomorrow and report back.

ATF changed by MD on B service at 38000 miles.

Engine runs like clockwork, starts every time easily and revs very freely. DPF seems to give no problems.
