ECU Not operational

When the car is started up the message ECU not operating is displayed, I have connected a code reader but that is saying "no fault" Anyone of you mercedes people have any idea before I put the car in for diagnostics?

i am sure the wording will be more specific than that. there will be many different ecu modules on any car.
