I have a C180, 122K miles.

Posted a problem last week. Driving the car and it just dead, little power, felt like it was going to stall when stationary. But, after turning the engine off, and restarting it, it appeared fine.

It's been to the local garage, and they say it needs a new ECU, about £1400 in total.

Does this seem about right? Both the price and soluation???

PS If anybody wins the lottery tonight can they think of me :)

There's a lot of good info. on here from members with similar problems( & your symptoms are just as mine were a couple of weeks ago) I've never heard of a duff ecu as a cause or remedy for this so be careful.
Firstly get a recommended trustworthy indie (reputation at stake!!) with Star diagnostics to take a look It is worth it every penny before you go any further
My rough running was mis diagnosed as a sh***ed kompressor(£1200+ labour!! )and thanks to jimsinessex had the breather/air intake pipes & valves replaced(£37 + labour) & hey presto.........all as good as new..ish.Also as Malcolm said MAS is the place to start & replace or clean as nec. but try & look for the cause as in mine, jimsinessex balal pep etc.
Hope this helps a bit & I wouldn't go for the ecu or that cost. Good luck & let us c class sufferers know how you got on

Did the garage do a proper dagnostic with a Merc reader, read the codes and look them up?

If not, then they are guessing at your expense and you will be their lottery.....

If you post your location, someone will be able to recommend a trustworthy independent garage that knows Mercs and can diagnose the problem for you.

As the other replies, get the codes read, its always the first move, but get them read by someone who knows what thet are doing, they should be used to working on our cars.

You could see what happens, when it is the MAF, the car will normally re start OK. Take it from there.

Also, if the MAF is the problem, the car will usually run better with it disconnected (i.e. running on the default ECU map instead of the bad readings from a faulty MAF).

Problem is now resolved, it was the MAF as everybody had previously told me. New one fitted (Not cheap, but al ot, lot cheaper than the £1400 quoted for a ECU)

New one fitted, and car performs like my old C180!!!

Thanks for all your help,

Till the next time (Hopefully not soon)
