Okay guys and gals, having posted up the request for help on my CLK not starting, it looks very likely that it is my ignition switch etc.

Given that it is probably this can anybody tell me the following;

1. Is it easy to replace the ignition switch
2. Does the replacement need to be programmed by MB?
3. What do I need to supply to MB if ordering the replacement part
4. Most importantly, how do I best determne if it is the ignition switch, conventional testing doesn't seem to be the order of the day
5. Any ideas where I would get a wiring diagram, I've had a quick look and its like a rats nest !, no chance without a diagram I reckon
6. Could it be a fuse?, I've checked all the ones I can find and they all seem okay

Any help MUCH appreciated
:D

Hi
well what a lot of questions.

First of all if we assume that it is the EIS you need to order the EIS via you main dealer having first supplied your reg document and relevant form of ID. Don't forget the DNA sample and verbal confirmation from all four great, great grand parents.

When the EIS arrives you can then order the green key useing the seriel number of the EIS supplied.

When you have both these items you can fit the EIS then insert the green key wait for the LED to stop flashing and hey presto you can start the car ( but nothing else works) Yes you guessed it, trip to dealer for control unit adaptations. sorry no way to aviod this.

so that items 1,2,3 dealt with now is it the ignition switch ?
good question, one that we offten don't get right. To determine this with any chance of being correct you need a full fault code report and a print out of actual values of the EIS while the key is in the ignition on possition 2 (igntion on)

ITEM 5

a wiring diagram won't help DAS is very complicted system which works around EIS (and digital comunication on the CAN network)as the main component, if EIS has live and earth thats about all you can determine.

From what i read regarding symptoms on your first post it doesn't sound like EIS i will now go back to that post and give my opinion regarding those symptoms.

good luck

Thanks for the posting, the car was recovered this morning by Merc Asst - thankfully, the MB dealer has now diagnosed the fault as one of the starter circuit relays/solenoids. I don't have the xact details yet, but I will tomorrow after they have fitted the replacement part.

What the MB dealer did say is that the symptoms did look like the EIS/DAS, but once they put it on the machine and read the fault codes, then it pointed to this part.

Thanks for all of the advice and pointers, very helpful indeed.

The good news is that this part only costs £38 plus the usual fitting, so with labour probably £300 sir !! :(

Anyway, at least it wasn't the EIS/DAS thank goodness.

Regards

Dave
