Hello all,

As per TSB LI54.25-P-056472. I need to send my EIS, keys and potentially ESL (elec. steering lock) off to be refurbed.

I have decided on using https://www.autotronics.co.uk/ to do mine at a cost of £250.

They have said that they need the above items, but I am unsure if there is an ESL in my car. I never hear a motor engaging lock and when the car is off I can turn the wheel (difficult) and no lock engages.

So before I pull the cluster and column a sunder, can somebody please advise.

Many thanks
Conor

If you have a column shift, you don't have an ESL motor (I'm pretty sure)

Ok, makes sense. I have a column shifter yes.

Currently, no ESL motor operates (maybe it's broke).. I will ask the guys in AutoTronics what the deal is.

Alex, is there anybody else you could better recommend for the repair, or would AutoTronics be alright? Thanks.

If your esl was stuck, the car wouldn't run, so it's a safe bet you don't have one :)

Can't recommend anyone, as we repair and program them in house usually, but don't offer it as a service.

I have a 2011 E350. Steering shifter. No ESL. It's immobilised electronically via gearbox.

When moving from a previous generation of Merc to this, I too wondered where my ESL was and why it wasn't working.

If you use one of the online parts catalogues with parts diagrams and search using your VIN, it will probably show the correct varient and in Steering column, you will see no ESL, but if you look generically without VIN, you will be able to find the ESL part number.

I need to confirm with autotronics before I send it all off.

I can confirm my EIS and keys are on their way to autotronics....

... and that its only a 10 minute to job to get the unit out.. and err... my car is parked on a random London street for the next few days, which I won't even have access until my keys are back.

Let's see how this unfolds hey!

So guys,

I can confirm this is fixed now.. with some certainty. I have put a few miles on the car and there doesn't seem to be an issue at all.

If the issue returns (doubtful) I will let you guys know.

Hmm.. symptoms again.

Was parking up just now.. and as I reverse, jumps into Park.. same fright as the first time it happened way back when (like I hit something)..

Humph...what to do. I think first port of call will be to contact Autotronics and see what they say.. although I suspect they will blame another component.

@alexanderfoti did you say you repair for this symptom / TSB? Do the symptoms ever return.. any ideas?

I have sent them off to autotronics in the past but not had an issue again
There is a TIPs doc for It. I'll try and dig out next week

Interesting. I must admit to being totally bummed out when it happened.

Yes I have the document here. I referred to that doc with autotronics and they said they would fix, no problem.
