My CLK, the wipers stopped working when stationary, they are designed to do so. Other than that, the wiper stalk is known to fail and may need replaced.

So you stop at traffic lights and its raining - the wipers dont work as they are designed not too, You see the traffic lights have turned green through the blurry screen, but you cant see the old woman still crossing as your wipers are designed not to work when starionary

Surely cant be....

thought of that . i shall also try turning the dash auto light etc off , try bonnet catch or go silly and break the mirror trying to get to the sensor

But they do, maybe from facelift onwards, not your 270 old style CLK.

Not sure how pre facelift worked, never had one, but post facelift, if the wipers were on intermittent and you stopped at traffic lights, they switched off until you moved and then became intermittent again. If the wipers were constant when you stopped, they changed to intermittent and so on. They also stopped working when you opened the passenger door to avoid your passenger getting a windscreen full in the face when getting in and out of the car.

Again, from 2005 on, windscreen stalk is a common fault.

On my old 202s without rain sensing the intermittent would increase in delay but still operate. If set to low speed they would drop to intermittent. Once moving everything returned to normal.

On the cars with auto rain sensing stopping at lights makes no difference as you'd expect given they wipe when needed.

Your problem does sound like a failing switch but if you have access to someone with star you can test this.

Also check the front scuttle for water.

I was just about to post do you know opening the bonnet (on our 07 facelift) will disable the wipers and washers then saw your comment... try bonnet catch ... so assume you have a potential fault in that circuit covered?

so guys , fumbled about today volts good 14 +, earths relays and fuses look good so going into the car dash autos are all off and i have the same symptoms return auto functions on same again , tried to get to the screen rain sensor yeah later not gonna force that any how by ths time im feeling sure its the stalk playing up after running the engine and using the stalk controls it seems if i hold the stalk in my fist and pull outward to the n/s of car there is some comparable operation and if i push the screen wash it goes cockahoop , but still turns all functions off when i indicate right , seems now i have to take the unit off to see if its five pin or six , just look at the position of those bolts oh great joy , so i have boked a session at the chiro for after to realine my spine ha

just one thing i noticed when repacing the covers with the engine running from cold the damn rad fan is spinning , is this associated or something new like a relay for the fan or the fan clutch maybe the plug in the bumper . i got a hammer ready ,;)
cheers
