hi guys,

went out this morning to bring my eldest son to school, and the car was frosted over (first time this winter),

so i started the car to warm it up inside and turned on the heated rear window button,

came back a few minutes later to see it was doing its job and noticed steam rising from my drivers side door mirror, i put my hand up to it and it was warm ! so I have a heated mirror on my door, but not on the passenger door,

is that normal that one of the two is heated, sounds daft to me but I just wanted to check,

I did note that the drivers side mirror has a line through it about one third of the way through vertically and perhaps thats to tell you that it's a heated mirror, the other mirror doesnt have this line

so is what I'm seeing normal for my car ? c200/1995

cheers

The line denotes where the flat part of the mirror changes to the convex part. I would have thought that both mirrors (if electically adjustable) would be heated. What does your manual (or the Russian Vin Decoder) say WRT the mirrors.

I would have thought that you would know better by say check on the VIN as standard fittings are not shown.

both are heated on my 202 and my 124

so maybe you have a problem with the passenger one. On the 202 they seem to come on when the temp falls below 4 deg celsius, on the 124, with the HRW.

I agree if they are standard, however if they are options, even if included in a Sport/Classic/Elegance/Avantgarde/SE trim park they may well be listed.

not on mine it doesnt, to either side of the line the mirror remains flat as a piece of mirror normally is, no convex or concave shape to either side of it at all,

i'll check the vin on the russian site shortly to see what it says,

thanks that's the info I needed,

still seems strange that they only heat the drivers side and not both,

also, does your mirror only 'defrost' when you turn on the heated rear windscreen ? or is it an automatic function of some sort

I'm amazed I've had the car nearly two years and hadnt noticed the defrosting mirror until now

No, just electric mirrors. Anywebs car is circa 1995 and his vin shows no electric mirrors at all. I suggested the vin decoder as it is quick and easy and may have coughed up some info.

ok if that's the case then why would my passenger mirror not be heating ? should i be looking for a fuse or relay ? the electric directional part of both mirrors works perfectly so power is getting to them

Anyweb I am sending you 2 papers on the dismanling of your mirrors.

The heated mirrors are standard, both sides.

The wires on the plugs on the mirrors heaters are Pins 1 and 2. fuses are 3 and 29.

If all this info was on the vin it would be like the stupid MB adverts where all but nothing is shown and 30 pages long.

its like anything, erm broke,

heating element, loose connection etc etc

I had the passengers side fail on my w220, not that i would ever known and picked up by the dealers.

ps they are deadly expensive parts to replace. you may be surprised regardless of car model

Just a thought if at some time the passenger side mirror glass was broken someone may have taken the cheap option and fitted an aftermarket replacement mirror. These are generally stuck to the old broken glass, this means that although the heater element may still be working the replacement glass being stuck to the old mirror doesn't heat up.
I cannot tell by your photos (I've just been looking at the pax side and realised it is the drivers side D'oh). Although I cannot tell on the real pax side either.

I can assure you Blobcat that after market stuck on mirrors do heat up and work very well, I have been there and done it,even in Sweden on my Saab9000exec. It tells you on the packets that the heated mirror still works.
You really should not make these comments if you do not know, and have not used them. It just makes more work in having to correct you.

I wondered if you would take offence at my suggestion .
If you remove the old glass and stick the replacement to the original backing then yes the heating element still works. If you stick the new replacement glass onto the old broken glass as per the guide on the packet then the heater has little if any effect. You obviously used a different replacement mirror.
I'm just coming up with options and ideas from real life to help a fellow forum member out.
