I have a 1987 190. A couple of years ago the drive in the electric sunroof came uncoupled and the same thing has just happened again (I heard the locking nut fall off and so had some warning). The electrics are fine, it is simply that what I presume is a locking nut has come undone and hence allowed the drive to work itself free. I haven't been riding the clutch on the sunroof drive mechanism and so I'm rather baffled as to how this should have happened again, especially as here in the UK I don't get to use the sunroof an awful lot!
This cost a small fortune to get repaired last time. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what might produce a better lasting solution that I might suggest to my mechanic (I presume that this isn't a job I could tackle myself).

electric sunroof

My sunroof on my 1990 190e came uncoupled a few years ago, at the point where the cable joins the roof mechanism. To get at the join you need to remove the inner roof panel, which you can do with the roof half open (if you can persuade it to be like that!). Pull down the front of the sunroof lining disengaging the plastic lugs, then the lining slides forward and out. You should be able to get to the linkage then.

My MB dealer had no idea how to recalibrate the mechanism and just advised me to leave it shut and not use it !! However, I discovered that adjustment is made via a small plastic wheel on the left hand side of the boot, towards the back, hidden under a plastic flap. You pull it out and twist it, like a watch, to adjust the 'closed' point.

Hope thats some use

I had exactly the same problem with a 190E some years ago! I found the solution was, as above, remove the inside panel and re-attach the control cable. It was with some trepidation that I started the job, but all in all it was fairly straightforward.
Roof worked OK after repair. no "re-calibration" required.

Technical advice and comedy-wow what a site!
Managed to repair the problem. A nut had worked loose and I gather from others I have spoken to that this is a more common fault than it ought to be.
Anyway I now have a fully-functioning sunroof (fortunately without the bash!).

I must admit, i wish i had a leccy sunroof in my 190, as its pretty awkward to open the manual one when you are driving along. It isnt the usual "Wind the handle" affair unfortunatly. More of a twist the drop down handle once, and drag the roof backwards. The only good thing is you can lock the roof in whatever position you like. (no bashing required!)
