Drivers side window, 1977 280 SE 116 model. Anyone replaced theirs, any problems doing so, any quick tips, can i swap the working rear window motor or are they different. New not available only on backorder @ £160 + VAT. Any ways of testing in place to confirm it's the Motor. Virtully any advice or thoughts welcome.
Thanks ALAN 123

You could try to swap motor with one from front passenger side, but before you do that, try to get a wiring diagram (Haynes manual) for your car. You can then see if the motor is OK, by applying 12v to the correct terminals. It could be anyone of a number of things (switch, relays, fuses etc).

If you have a multimeter, then you can check the impedance (resistance) at the terminals and compare it to a known working one. (It's a bit of a pain to have to remove other door panels, though.)

With a meter or indicator, you could also see whether the motor terminals are receiving any voltage when you operate the windo switch (don't forget, you may need key in ignition for this)

Andy may have some more ideas.

I recently replaced a motor in a 1985 model ,it was quite easy, putting it back together I found it best to put the plastic slider in first then rest the bolts in the respective holes, it didnt take long to get the door panels off but be careful with the plastic plugs that hold it into the doorframe as they get a little brittle and can snap.
try www.used-car-van-parts.co.uk
I had used parts from one of them, £50 for a window motor.

Electric Window

Alan.

About a year ago i had a problem with the electric windows on my old 250D (w124), i tried to swap the motors front to back, but they were different so this could not be done, i suspect this to be the case on your vehicle, but cannot be certain.

The window motor is basically a simple electric motor, which ultimately requires feed and earth to complete a circuit.  This circuitry is then controlled by relays etc, such that when you push the window switch in the open position it powers the motor to turn in a given direction, the window wnder mechanism, (commonly known as a regulator) then lowers the window. When you operate the same switch to close the window, the circuitry takes over again, but this time it supplies power to the opposite side of the motor causing it to rotate in the opposite direction. You've guessed it, the window now goes up.

What i did was to identify the wires that feed the motor, and disconected them, i then applied power directly to them from a spare battery, and saw that the motor opperated correctly in both dircetions.

I would advise you to try this first, as its simple and FREE, this will either rule out the motor, or confirm thats its the culprit.

Hope this is of use, and if the explanation of the motors operation was an "egg sucking" excercise, then i appologise.

If you take loose all the bolts holding the motor then push it away from you to free it  the window will slide down or you may have to use your free hand to pull it if the motor is seized,if it still wont budge feel behind the motor for the bolt that holds it to the frame und undo it ,its the same size spanner that fits the other bolts in the door.

you say the electric window is not working on one side.
i had a similar problem on my 190e-it turned out to be a faulty electric window switch that sits on the wood besides the gearstick. i removed the switches and interchanged them-this told me that the motor was not faulty but the switch-replacement was easy as switch available from dealer for about 15 pounds-cheaper from eurocarparts -good luck.
