190E (old). Is it normal that the electric windows work with the ignition off and no key in the ignition? The driver side does not work properly - it goes up but not down (could be worse..). I suspect either a bad connector or switch but it could be a short I suppose if the windows are meant not to work when there is no key in the ignition.
thanks

some cars are equipt with a delay so you can power up the windows after you have turned the ignition off. helps you. and some cars...noticabley the newer ones operate the windows when the doors are open....helps you shove the window up without messing around if you didnt put them up earlier.

altho it could also be a problem too.

Should be able to go up and down, with door open only. W124 anyway. There is two buttons near the hindge, one for interior light, the other to allow window closing.

Won't work with R129, Have to hold down button on remote.

Yes you can operate all 4 windows, up and down with the key out of the ignition and any one of the doors open on the 190 series, not sure about other models but this is the case with the 190s. Perfectly normal.

thanks for the clarification - now I have to look for loose connectors or broken switches!

Yes electric windows and sun roof will function when a door is open and no key in ignition. It obviously does not work if all doors are shut to save anyone pocking a stick through a small opening (or if you left roof open) and open the windows to break in.

Windows & sunroof should also close (if left open) by shutting the car then with the key in the driver's side door hold over in the lock position. The reverse will happen if you open the car with the key and hold the key round in the open position - windows will open (not roof).

Only applies if you have "comfort locking" which wasn't available on all the 190s (or 124s) I think it became available 1990 onwards

'Comfort' wasn't on my '88 230E, but was on my '93 300CE.

What is 'comfort locking?' My 1992 W 124 will close all 4 windows on locking and holding, but will not open them all on unlocking and holding. Am I missing something, or not doing something right?

Seems you have comfort locking but not comfort unlocking!

My windows don't work with ignition off (W202) but I can boast both closing and opening (everything) via remote.
