I have been having intermittent electrical problems on my E270CDi (March 2003) as follows:

kick down fails to work - the only solution seems to be stop the car, turn ignition off and remove key, open door, close door, lock car and wait for alarm to arm, unlock car, open door, close door and start car.

My dealer have variously diagnosed faulty components in the Turbo, replaced several sensors, twice replaced the turbo, replaced the wiring loom and replaced the ECU.

Also I get a problem where my stereo system displays the channel/cd/phone/tape, but no sound. The only way to recover this seems to be get out of the car and wait for about 10 minutes.

Whilst the dealer seems to be trying to resolve these I am not certain that we are any closer.

My car has now done 33,000 miles and these problems first manifested themselves within the first 4000 miles.

take it back and demand a nwe one on the premise of fit for purpose...

or leave it with them, get an S class 320 CDi as a hire car (accept nothing less) until they fix it..

sounds like a computer is going haywire or a sensor is kaput throwing it into emergency mode..

I'm very worried now !! I posted on General with a similar problem and you asked if they had sorted it. Well this Saturday my kickdown failed when I was pulling out into a very busy junction, a little scarey would be an understatement. Anyway I drove it straight to Mercedes without switching off the car (as this clears the fault). They have diagnosed a problem with the Turbo. This put my mind at rest, as at least I figure it'll now get fixed. They kept the car and got me a hire car. Can I ask you say you have had a number of things replaced was this based on what the computer was telling them or were they just taking an educated guess ?

I've had this a number of times too, and the same with the cruise control which has stoped working until the car is restarted. Like you say the stereo looks like its working but no sound at all, and has to be left for a while to work again. Its only happened about 3 times in 18 months. The dealer changed the audio gateway and upgraded the software for the cruise control but it didn't sort either issue.

Guydewdney gave you the best advice. Be sure to take it. Nothing less will get you sorted out. Any resistance get a lawyer to write to them citing goods not fit for purpose. Its a very clear term and very precise. The only way they can defend it is to let into court and have a judge rule that a crap car is fit for purpose. The fall out of the publicity is somnething MB will not want. If you have a lease take a look at the lease agreement, you can actually force the leasing company to sort it out because your only obligation with them is to maintain the car to the manufacturers recommendations. If you do that and the delaer cannot fix it they have a problem which they must sort out.

Electrical Problems - E270CDi update

Thanks for your replies on this. Having contacted the dealer and Mercedes Benz H/Q in UK I seem to have a fully functioning car. I have had another new turbo fitted and this time it seems to have fixed the problems.

I was told by the dealer that this is now a recognised problem - the vanes on the turbo can stick open leaving no power. Anyway since having new turbo I have driven an additional 3000 miles with no problems. (Touch wood).

Also I have had stereo software upgraded and no problems their also.

Now enjoying car again.
