Hi all,
Recently I've noticed a whirring sound coming from the engine mainly at startup. Once the engine has warmed up though, it seems to disappear. It's a sort of electronic whirring sound which gets louder and higher as the accelerator is depressed.

Any ideas?

Johnny  :-(

noise that gets louder under acceleration but disappears when warm - sounds like an induction or exhaust leak to me. As the manifold heats up, it expands and seals again .....???

Get a friend to rev the car when the bonnet is open and try to listen for where the noise is coming from.

The reason I asked earlier if the noise was in D as this is caused by the Oil deflector, cracked or broken, this info is for a 722.4 gearbox in a 202080 car.

The lower cap has to be removed along with the intermediate plate.

Please check the info given with your vin number is it a 202080 car.

I've noticed a whistling noise a bit like a supercharger spooling up.
Sounds to be linked to the radio though.:(

As it is a diesel, i cannot blame ignition coils etc when you used to fit a suppressor to the ignition coil .
Maybe my alternator needs one.

Do deisels have an air Pump? if they do, that's what it sounds like to me...

It should switch off after a minute or two. If it doers, that's your noise.

I got rid of mine 'cos I could do without the noise, and the MOT only checks emissions when the engine's hot, so why have one?

The reduction in weight helps your consumption and green concience, and the extra room under the bonnet is worthwhile. You do need to get a shorter serpantine belt, but all sorts of lengths are available, so no problem there...

A blocked transmission oil filter will cause something like this.

I was thinking if the noise only happens in gear then that the noise may well be transmission or differential related. You need to get the car checked out properly or you may destroy something costly.

I posted the known reason, it is not the diff as it does it D and the car is not moving.

Thanks guys! What's my best plan of attack? Get it checked out by my local indie? (I'm not technically minded when it comes to cars and don't think I could check it myself!)
