Hi all,

Didn't mean to sound too dramatic but it is an emergency!

1984 500SEC

Got in to the car yesterday evening and the key would not turn no matter how I tried to wiggle or twist it. The steering lock is on so I cant tow it either.

Anybody got and tips, fixes or things to try as its stuck somewhere where it needs to be moved asap!

Thanks in advance.

Yes its in Park!

I'm presuming having the barrel changed is a big job? Is it DIYable?

Thanks,

Les

Is the steering lock on ? If so, twist the steering wheel against the lock to the left or the right while trying the key at the same time, or away from the lock as the case may be.

The steering lock on my W124 needs a bit of gentle finagling like this once in a while.

If the key will not work in the doors, then it would seam to indicate that the fault is more to do with a worn key.

Ouch... there's your problem, as Television said. Although usually it's the locks that wear down before the key does (at least on my MG - you can open the doors with any damn key

MB can make a key up for you pretty quick, but need your VIN number and your logbook as proof. I was never able to find a generic locksmith able to do MB keys
