The thing that annoys me about this type of case is that most of them would have bought the same car irrespective of any cheat device or increased emissions making the whole thing somewhat questionable in terms of compensation in my view.

It’s not actually that bigger of a settlement, the top figure is not just for those that were part of the class action, it’s for all units manufactured in that time with the software cheat globally. A person then has to prove ownership in that time as well as mileage covered so as to be compensated correctly, then as LK mentions then lawyers will take ~60% in their fees out of your settlement.
So if the average person get a grand out if it they’ll have done okay
