Hi,
I took my car in for MOT today to Mercedes in Stockport. Not had any problems with the car since I bought it in June (2016 E220).

I returned 8 hours later to be told that they had replaced the nox sensor. I asked why and the gentleman advised me that “your EML was on when you brought it in”. Well I nearly fell off my chair!! I am an amateur mechanic and am pretty well versed in maintaining cars. I have had very bad experiences with previous cars with the EML coming on time after time and I am not the type of person to ignore this (I’m Quite OCD).

I just don’t believe that the light was on and that I would not have noticed it immediately. In my previous car, the screen flashed up with “engine fault - repair needed” accompanied by an audible sound.

so my question is, what happens when the EML comes on? Is it a small orange engine block sign on the dash? And does any other warning appear on the screen?

I was also advised that they had “carried out the recall work”. I was not informed of any recall, certainly not when I purchased the car from Mercedes in London, so I’m slightly annoyed by that. Apparently it was a software update but the gentleman was very cryptic and I can’t be sure of that.

Customer experience was very stressful. Upon taking the car in this morning, I was hoping to speak with somebody but instead, I was ushered to a computer terminal to ‘check in’ with no human contact.

Just wondered what the EML looks like in the W212

thanks

Hmmm...

Engine warning light comes on after software update requiring Nox sensor replacement...o_O
There’s one or three threads on this forum with exactly those symptoms...

Usually the owner picks up the car following said software update and the engine warning light comes on afterwards.... usually with Mercedes advising it’s completely unrelated and a ££££ bill...

Did they charge you for the work?
Also did they ask permission to update the software?

The software update is Merc's version of VW's diesel-gate emissions scandal ..... Merc has managed to keep theirs a little more under the RADAR though, hence the dealer being a bit cryptic.

Ok, very interesting. So what does this mean? Should I be concerned now?

No they didn’t ask my permission before updating the software and I’m not very happy.

edit: I’ve just researched the merc diesel gate scandal and I see what you guys mean.

I’m worried now as the car has been superb - I just wanted an MOT and having them carry out additional work without my approval seems very wrong.

incidentally, is the EML signified on the main screen or just the symbol on the dash?

Apparently when u authorize a service at Benz, you agree to any software updates deemed nessacary. If they changed a nox sensor, normally 2? And didn't charge you? Consider yrself b lucky. If they changed at yr cost don't pay, it's all due to Benz that the changes are required. Crap sensors that need changing when the crap software is updated.

id raise hell if it were mine pal

I think that's been attempted previously.
Apparently the car is sold but the software is still owned by MB, and they do as they wish with it.

I still feel that once they've screwed with the map to rectify their corrupt original install then the car is no longer the one that was sold. But it would take more energy than I could find to challenge them.
Mind they do tell us that each motor will give better consumption than it ever could in the real world and that also seems acceptable.
Then they amend the map and often we read that the consumption is then even worse, but not because of them.
