Enabling/retrofitting rain sensing wipers

I have a C220cdi sports coupe, 2002, that appears to have the rain sensing kit on the windscreen, but the person who originally bought it didn't select the option.

I know of another car (focus) that requires only a new wiper stalk to activate rainsensing - all the circuitry was already there, and that made me wonder if it's similar for the merc.

Any ideas?
