Engine and Outside Temperature Gauges Linked? (E320 CDI)

I have a puzzling situation with my E320 CDI. First, the engine temperature was rarely rising above 60C. For that reason I bought a new thermostat, which I have yet to fit. However, when the temperature did go up to say 70-75C it was accompanied by a similar rise in the displayed outside temperature.

When I was driving home tonight the outside temperature supposedly dropped from 14.5C to 2.5C over about 2 miles along with the engine temperature, and this was not because the car had been parked running.

Before I go ahead and change the thermostat, is there anything else I should check? I didn't think the two temperature guages were linked, but perhaps I'm wrong.
