Hi Can anyone help?

I've got a 1996 C180 manual petrol (128K) which is cutting out whilst stationery or driving. When i was stationery the other day it revved over 2500rpm and then cut-out, it was revving like I had my foot on the accelerator. It doesn't matter whether the engine is hot or cold it still does it and it doesn't do it all the time- Any ideas anyone please?!

Thanks

Vanessa

Dodgy fuel pump or fuel pump relay would cause erratic cut outs.

But the high revs wouldn't be caused by a dodgy fuel pump or fuel pump relay I don't think so it may be something else.

Do a search on the forum for cut out and c180 and there will be more clues. Could be a dodgy sensor.

sounds like the OVP

over voltage relay protection,

it's a big rectangular thingy under the electric ECU cover on the opposite side of the fuse box under the bonnet,

it's easy to spot as it has a clear top with a fuse in the centre, if it's going bad (and they do especially when the weather is like this) then you may need a new one, or need to clean the legs (pull it out while the car is off, and clean the metal contact legs thouroughly)

search the forums here for OVP, when that thing cuts in of it's own accord it can force the engine to REV up with no touching of the accelerator pedal, and that's quite a scary experience if you don't know what's happening (happened to me last winter)

cheers

What Anyweb says makes sense as I think the OVP being faulty can effect the fuel pump relay circuit so hence the cuts outs giving the impression of a faulty fuel pump or fuel pump relay.

Someone will know better about this for sure.
