All you men on arguing,Why dont you fit a new thermostat and try it.The winter will be over before you resolve this problem,And the springs will be obsolete.
Just a thought.

Ok ok. I have finally fitted the new thermostat (87°C) and it gets straight up to temperature. In the process the original thermostat top cover split and then crumbled into nothingness?!?! Turns out this has been superceeded twice since the original! It is now metal with a screw hole in the top...it goes all the way through and I have no idea what this is for (neither did the MErc dealer?) other than to let air out when filling up with new coolant???

Regarding the springs a mate of mine is getting me some from Eibach and new Bilstein shocks (Sportline rated and length)...I shall let you know the results in due course.

Is that it then, no more arguments?

How about one about whether bacon sarnies should have brown or red sauce?

;o)

Bacon sandwiches need an egg and neither sauce.

LOL!

An egg? Don't be daft. I've worked in the sandwich industry as a consultant for the last 30 years and make a pretty penny doing it. You cannot tell me the egg is preferable to brown or red sauces. I have eaten many bacon sarnies, and at no time did I ever consider the egg.

Eggs are funny things, nice to eat and very useful when I had a Imp Husky as that used 6 eggs per 1000 miles in the water system, you could not use sauce for that

Do you mean Hillman Imp or Hillman Husky, not sure as I recall there being a bit of both and by the way could you shorten the springs and if you did would the sump have hit the black stuff or due to its torsional rigidity would the back end have been lower or higher than the front end when going up hill AND round a corner;);) always assuming that the engine had not overheated in the process:lol::lol::lol:

Could it be that the hole running right through could be used as an added escape route for the coolant mixture if the thermostat gets stuck (broken/paks-up/ends its life) in the closed position?

Just a thought.

Stats can fail open closed and stuck part way, if in any doubt replace it since a stuck closed condition or falling apart and closing will rapidly over heat the engine which could be fatal to the big lump of metal who's temerature it is intended to keep at about 80-90 c. Flush out and replace the anti freeze soloution at the same time since age reduces the efficacy of the corrosion inhibitor which ain't good for the long term, in particular the head gasket may be prone to damage due to corrosion at the edges of the waterways lifting its sealing faces. (the but of jokes Skodas were very prone to this)
If the car takes a fair distance to warm up it is almost certain that the stat is dodgy.
The gauge does have a degree of uncertainty, it is only an indicator not a measuring instrument so expect some differences in reading from example to example. In most cars the temp sensor is in the engine side of the stat housing or there abouts. it is heated by the water and cooled by air passing over its outside so expect it to read a little lower than the real water temp.

If you persist in running an over cooled engine, wear will be accelerated and eventualy you will find a need to add oil (which is designed to operate at temperatures around 80 and higher) every time you stop, the car will convert it into blue smoke due to severe wear of its piston rings.

As a diy job 25 quid should be sufficient funds for a stat and the antifreeze (you can then spend the garage fees on beer).
