Hello All,
I have a 1968 250 saloon that I wish to get back on the road.
It's in good nick accept for the engine - most of which is on the M40 following a rather spectaular blow.

Any ideas on how to get back on the road, as finding a direct replacement engine has not been easy.

thanks in anticipation

Try these

Mercman Southampton, Dronsfields Saddleworth (oldham), and Crewe Engines, as well as any of the others who advertise in Mercedes Enthusiast and Mercedes Owner.

Thanks for the info

No joy with them, apart from an offer to rebuild (c.£2.5K), so It looks like I'll have to buy another car for the engine, or use mine as a garden ornament.

thanks again.

you could try googling

on W113/Mercedes/ Pagoda or variations thereof. I'm sure you'll find something that might help, amongst all the dross. Don't give up.

I think the ref no. for the engine is M114.920 as fitted to the W114 saloon and Coupe.

I'd recommend purchasing a donor car and taking the engine from that. For example, a W114 250 should have a similar engine. www.mbz.org has a useful database of models and engines over the years, so you can match up the engine to the model(s) you will be seeking. In that age range, there should be a good number of rusty/MoT failed Mercs with a decent engine, and if you look keen to take the vehicle away from the vondor, should negotiate it for around £200-250 max.

Of course, the other advantage is that you have a complete car. You might be able to get the engine running in the original car and check it over before the transfer. Also, you have the choice of "best of" components when you swap over, eg alternator, starter motor, water pump, etc.

Let me know if you need technical backup on the swapping of the engines - I have recently done this on a W114 too. So long as you have the right equipment and enough space (and time) (sounds a bit Dr Who) its not such a difficult job. There are some awkward bits though!!!

There's a 200D engine from a 114 series sitting in my garage that needs clearing out if you don't mind a top speed of 86 (acutally I seem to remember about 95 on a downhill stretch and a 0 to 60 that takes forever but does return 35mpg. There's also a load of other 114/115 stuff in the garage.
