Hi I have a 2016 c220 d sport it has got to 120,000miles and has got a major problem and the engine is in need of a rebuild. I have been informed that Mercedes only build them to get to 100,000 miles before they go wrong. this is to make people go over to Electric. I am also informed that in 2015 the Motor manufacturers got together and agreed this ! Is this true ?

Hello and welcome

The OM654 does have a few issues unfortunately…:(

MB still do 3 year unlimited mileage warranty so they can and do go well beyond 100k easily. I’ve taken 3 to well over 100k and all were running better at 100k than they were at 20k.

Taxation is what’s getting drivers from ICE to EV not reliability :(

My brother had a 2016 C220 as well for a company car, ran to 140k before his V90 was delivered, suspect it’s still running today so I’d say what you have been told is a great big pile of horses excrement

As most of us know any engine that is serviced regularly ( not the manufacturer's guidelines eg 15000 mls as some now state.) but 6000 or every 12 months they should be able to achieve I would think getting on for 200/250k and that's petrol. I know there are the exceptions to the rule. Take for instance the Alfa Brera (if that's how you spell it) 3.2 which a friend of mine has. Apparently that engine is only good for about 75000 mls but that's Alfa's for you. ( No disrespect to Alfa owners )
Regular oil changes using manufacturers spec oil and filters is the key.

For the OM654 engine a 120k top end rebuild is not uncommon if you want to know more do search on YouTube cam followers tend to wear and in turn the camshaft wears badly. It would be interesting to know the service intervals of your car ie miles covered between oil changes there is a possibility that early oil changes may reduce the risk of this happening

Biggest killer of many engines is lots of cold running as the oil never gets up to a high enough temperature to drive out condensation that forms as the engine cools. Hence oil changes should be more frequent for cars that do mostly short journeys.

I've seen cars with oily emulsion within the rocker covers due to this (rather than a gasket failure) leading to camshaft failure.
Mileage itself isn't an indicator of wear. High mileage motorway cruisers are often the most reliable!
Smaller engines reach temperature more quickly, just down to the physical mass to heat up, diesels take longer than their petrol equivalents due to higher efficiencies.
In my opinion, if there's any "con" by manufactures for engines its stop/start technology.

What needs to be rebuilt?

Its had a known issue with collapsing rocker shaft bearings for a while and there is a modifed camshaft bed to go with it. We have also seen oil pump bearing failures cause the timing chain to snap.

Smart + others :)
We replace cams and followers on this engine at least once a month. Engine with 100k, we replace ghe timing chain at the same time as we’ve heard of some that snap at 140k??!

If planned obsolescence was the name of the game, Then rather than concentrating on their engines, I'd say MB would be much better placed in going for bodywork disintegration. After all they already have a successful history in achieving this, hardly any planning required.;)
