Engine management light on - S320

The yellow engine management light on my 2001 Petrol S320 has been on for the last 250 miles. This is the yellow light at the left hand of the cluster showing a graphic of an engine. Nothing is showing on the malfunction screen.

The problem started when I was over 200 miles from home, the manual says that this is either an ignition or exhaust fault. The car is running fine, no loss of power or change in fuel economy.

Can anyone suggest where I start with this one, I had hoped it was a temporary problem that would clear overnight but it hasnt. The only thing I have thought of is a full reset by diconnecting the battery, any help would be gratefully accepted.

Any slight contamination on the 02 sensor will turn the lamp on, in many cases the car runs a bit on the lean side, as it did with the contaminated fuel crisis.

The MAF can also turn it on, if the performance of the car starts to deteriorate then it will be more likely the MAF

It sometimes goes away on its own, I do not think that disconnecting the battery will take it away

The light is warning you that something is up. The fact that there are no other symptoms YET does not imply there won't be in the future or that whatever it is, won't cause damage to something else over a period. So don't ignore it or try to turn it off until you know for sure.
Get the fault codes read and find out what it's trying to tell you.
