Engine management light

i have A140 elegance.
it's registered in november 2000.
recently the engine management light came on.
i took it to a garage.
they carried out a ecu decode & diagnostic test.

they managed to turn off the engine management light.

they came up with the following fault codes:

FAULT CODES = P0600
FAULT CODES = P0170

however the engine management light has come on again after three days.
does anyone have any suggestions what the problem might be ?
it drives okay so far.

Hi, if you check on the link below it gives a range of fault codes which may be of help. Fault listed for your 2nd. item is; "P0600 Serial Communication Link Malfunction"

I am not sure what exact text is with those codes but I can tell you the most common cause of engine light on a a-class is for the air mass which is integrated into the engine control unit. if this is so then it can be repaired, or a new unit is very costly.

wait until someone can give us the text for the codes to be sure.

Yeah we don't go by fault codes here but we get loads of A-Class merc ecu's in.. and I'd say 9/10 of the A-Class merc ecu's we get have faults down to the air mass unit which as mentioned above is mounted on top of the ecu.

We can remanufacture these (providing your vehicle is a manual A-Class) the automatic a-class mercedes units are non-repairable I'm afraid.

Engine management light came on my C180 2001 couple of days ago. Don't seem to have any other problems though, just driven app 300 miles without any decrease in fuel consumption or misfire. Runs as smoothly as always has done.

Hi Mate,

I would put a scanner on it anyway and just have it checked out. The engine light is lit when a sensor picks up a problem.

Will do when i return home this weekend, thanks. Noticed that when i hit speed bump the light went out but came on again shortly afterwards, might be a clue there.

In this case it could be just some warning malfunction
