What could be the symptoms of worn engine mounts except vibration?

All depends if there broken or the rubbers heavily compressed/gone hard.

One symptom at start is a thud as the engine fires. Another is changing gears (more apparent on manual, or auto from P/N to D) the engine thuds.

depends on the car but I've also had exhaust breakages with worn mounts. (tends to affect transverse engines though and MBs tend to be RWD.)
Basically the mounts do 3 things
1) Hold the engine in place
2) Suppress noise
3) Suppress vibration.

If any of these 3 aren't being done properly - check the mounts.

Open the bonnet and see how much the engine moves when someone puts it in forward and reverse (with their foot slammed on the brake and parking brake on!) and then watch how much it shakes when they switch it off.
