I am building a Ford P100 pickup truck and its having a mercedes engine installed into it, i bought an engine off Ebay

(it was cheap but im taking the guys word its ok!!)

I have the engine number an i am hoping someone on here can give me a little information about it.

the number is

R117 016 4301 (then the mercedes 3 pointed star) 4

thanks for any info or maybe known things to watch out for.

As it starts R117, I reckon it will be an M117 V8 (either a 5.0 or a 5.6).

2v per cylinder, OHC, Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection (CIS-E) as standard. If it's the 5.0, I believe they are 245bhp stock, the 5.6 is nearer 280(?). If you take the alternator off, it may have the capacity written on the end of the head (mine did - in yellow!!). It will be from the w126 SE, SEC or SEL series cars (up to 1991 IIRC).

First thing on your list to do, seeing as you have no history with it (I assume) is change the timing chain and the guides, if a guide breaks, it can do untold damage to the engine, and they are known for going brittle over time....

Good luck with the project mate, everybody loves a hot-rod pickup :D We can compare notes if you like, 'cos I'm putting a 5.0 M117 in my Merc 190e!

Cheers, Martin

thanks for that, the guy said it came from 1988 SEC and he "thought" it was a 5 litre and it had been running fine when it was removed from the car.

I have a lot of wiring and various plugs to sort through once the weather warms up a bit (i have to work outside on it)

It has an auto on the back of it, is there a reasonable manual that fits these engines?

here it is

Certainly looks like mine - definitely either the 5.0 or the 5.6. Mine didn't have the cover over the front of the fan, might indicate a difference, or might just indicate that mine fell off!

As far as I know, there are no manual boxes that bolt up, whatever you use, you'll probably have to have an adaptor plate or custom bellhousing made up. Some Supra boxes are quite strong apparently? Might be worth have a look at getting one made up? Having said that, I've got a 5 speed manual out of my 190e 2.6, when I next pull the engine, I'll have a butchers, see if it looks like it might fit at all (I doubt it though!).

Will you be keeping the KE-Jetronic injection, or using megasquirt or some other 'DIY' ecu? Or will you be keeping it simple (?) and sticking a carb/s on it? I'm toying with the idea of megasquirting mine (www.megasquirt.info and www.msefi.com), with individual throttle bodies from a bike.... Maybe a future project for when it's all actually plumbed in and running ;)

Cheers, Martin

I'm not over stressed about getting a manual gearbox for it, the engine is being mounted on the back of my P100 pickup truck just behind the cab, so it becomes mid engined, the auto will save sorting a complicated gear linkage and will do me for a while i think.

The 'box has a sport button, and i have heard of the "first gear pull away" modification which i shall investigate further so in a car probably less than half the weight of the SEC it should shift a bit anyway, especially as i think i may be struggling with lowish gearing if the auto's top gear is 1:1 as i think it may be.

My friend has a BMW 540 and has just bought himself some ZX12 46mm throttle bodies and is planning on running it on MoTec http://www.motec.com.au/ managment, he normally works quite fast so im hoping he gets it sorted before i get to that point, as i would expect his experiences to be mostly applicable to the mercedes engine.

I AM on a much more severe budget than he is though, so cost is a major factor, i have yet to pull the top of the engine and have a look at the inlet manifold and see how feasable it is to build up one for the TB's

Sule, Your engine number can be found on your registration document; section4 - P.5 ; it begins with 111961220-----., or on the back of the cylinder block (hell knows how your supposed to read it !! ).
Can't help with the aircon except to say check the fuses in the engine compartment back left , fuses 3,5 and 11.
The check engine light ;you will need to have the codes read and any fault rectified before this is reset ; check the Yellow Pages in your area for independent MB garages.
