I have a 220 cdi and am just wondering if the oil checking system is totally reliable? The car had an A service 6k miles ago and I've done 2k since I bought it. I've just done a 1000 mile trip nearly and on checking the oil it again says it's ok. I check it on level ground but just wondering if there's any cause for concern? :(

I do not think so, when they are working they are fine, the only faults are when they tell you that you need oil when you do not

I have some experience of this type of system on Merc Atego trucks and a situation where a faulty sensor had oil being put in and then having to be drained out so you make a good point. I know these engines are very good if looked after but it's one more technological development in quality cars which leaves the car telling you it's ok and I guess you wonder what if it's not right and the car runs low on oil.Must be a warning back up light I guess.

I have no dip stick in my SL and I hate it, and its no longer possible to buy a longer dip stick when it will not reach the oil;)

I suppose it's the absolute confirmation of dipping the oil which is peace of mind.Getting used to the car now and sussing small problems sent to spoil the Merc experience.
