i have 57 plate sprinter 313 with a problem of rising engine oil due to fuel leaking into oil. i have owned from new and has had the problem from day 1.Dont know much about engines and therefore have been fobbed off for the last three years by the main dealer. i was told i am doing many short journeys with a cold engine and engine is allways on choke hence fuel leaking into oil. is this true ?? the dealer told me there is nothing they can do to fix this. the oil level rises slowly over about 6-9 thousand miles. any suggestions on how to fix ??

Hello and welcome, I know little about diesels but have the injectors ever been checked for leaking or not shutting off.

Hopefully one of the techies will come and join the thread

I dont know too much about the sprinters but going on past history of while working on cars and we had a couple like this and it was the high pressure pump that was leaking inside the engine thus filling the oil up.

You have to be careful with this as it also thins the oil out we had one come in and the oil was like water it had thined out that much

Hi

If this is a Diesel made around 2007 it will have a Particulate filter. The regeneration/cleaning process on some vehicles can cause diesel in the oil if the engine does not get really hot. Best to drive for 30 mins at 60 mph at least once a month.

The engine detects a blocked filter and attempts to burn off the blockage.

This process does not work well if the engine never gets hot. I suspect that mercedes use the same system as volkswagen where diesel is pumped through the injectors on the exhaust stroke and some excess diesel gets into the sump if the engine is continually trying to clear the filter.

Any real experts out there?

hi alec
this is the explanation given to me by the main dealer. i presume the fact that i take it easy whilst drivivng only makes the problem worst as the engine takes even longer to get hot. also any idea if this problem still exists in new vehicles or does it affect only 2007 model vans.

Choke ?

aleem1 short journeys with a cold engine and engine is allways on choke hence fuel leaking into oil. QUOTE said:
Please excuse my ignorance about sprinters but I did not think diesels had a choke, is there any chance that this may be a pertol sprinter if they make such a thing ?

It is not normal under any circumstances to have the oil level rise unless there is a fuel leak in to the sump either via the HP pump or past the cylinders, which I doubt if it has been going on from new.

Regards.

ie. Excess Fuel; Which removes oil protection from Cylinder Bores , Especially on Cold Engines !

i do understand BORE WASH, and the damage it can do to rings etc, but why did you quote me in that post?

Sorry I dont agree this fault is almost certainly to do with the DPF not being regenerated,;) my Mazda 6 2008 continually done this and I was hammering the hell out of it to try and stop it, eventually I got rid, the Mercedes Lorries use ADBLUE in a seperate tank so dont suffer from this problem, its a scurge of modern diesels nearly as bad as EGR s.:rolleyes:
