Just a quick query, What engine oil would you (or MB) recommend for my 1996 C250TD? Was someone attracted to Magnatec (he,he?) or did I dream that?
Dave
C250TD
Both my local dealers use mineral based 15W40 non diesel-specific oil. Magnatec fits this bill.
I had my car filled with Millers XFD 5W40 full synthetic. No oil use so far in 3K.
Millers developed the first diesel specific oil for high speed engines, and I have used their Semi-synth for years. It seems to come out more slippery than some oils go in.
Do you rate millers oil's well then!,I went to their web site and yep, they quite alot of diffirent oils.I notice also they have a stockist near me (Glasgow),how much are compared to the usual makes that we know?.
Millers oils appear to be good. I read a report in DC magazine some years ago where a Peugeot 405 1.9 D engine was stripped after 250 K miles. All tollerances were within manuacturing spec. This was run on the original semi-synth. Their XFE and XFD both exceed and have MB 228.3 approval. I use XFD to give full protection over the long fill period that the ASSYST gives.
Skip using a stockist as there is a Millers depot in Glasgow. Tel 0141 8823216. This will be cheaper and advice will be free.
They produce a vast range of products, most not on the web site. They also have an oil analysis service.
Buy in bulk- you get the best prices that way, but you will be pleased anyway.
I run my car (W126 500SE) on Red Line fully synthetic oil
and as has been said they come out with more slipperiness than a lot of oil goes in.I also use synthetic
oil in the transmission. On any car using a synthetic oil
after it has got some miles under the belt will pay dividends as you can run them for longer (if you want) and they do not break down like mineral based oils.
Incidentally, oils like Magnatec contain a small percentage of the poly-ol esters that synthetic oils are made from so why stick in a small quantity when you can
fill up! The down side is the cost. 1 US Gallon is about
£28-£30 but if you leave it in for 10,000 miles its not so
bad and your engine will more than thank you. If anyone
would like a Red Line brochure leave me an address and
I'll post one.
Interesting replies, thanks.
Dave, have a look at www.millersoils.co.uk and click on automotive world ( top left). The XFD looks like the way to go, even if it is pricy.
Dave,
dont worry about buying the stuff, i ahve the perfect answer, i notice you are in Kent, well pop over to ESsex and visit the Sh*ll
refinery in Stanford Le Hope, sneak in there at night, im sure they wont miss a thousand gallons or so!!!
Sorry meant to add above. We once had a trip to the ESSO depot at Tilbury, very interesting learning how they add all the additives into the fuel.
By the way it comes into Tilbury via a pipe line from Southampton, i've been trying for years to find it so that i could "tap" into it!! that would get the jolly old running costs down a bit.
Try Comma oils. They are in Gravesend. Again a trade oil supplier, but are not rubbish. They are owned by Exxon (Esso). Alternatively try http://www.theoilstore.com/lubricants.asp
