Took my car for an MOT on Friday, to Eastleigh borough Council at Hedge end from Bournemouth, Put in to manual and drove there so it would get it nice and hot with a couple of bottles of diesel magic to burn of the carbon build up, when i got there, the car over heated, 120c, switched of the engine, which was a mistake because it would not start again, even after it cooled down. in the end, had it transported to MB in Poole, they will look at it on Monday, any ideas as to what caused the over heating and failing to start, fan not running would not have helped, but this happened just a few minutes after i got there. any help would be much appreciated.

When you say it wouldn't start, was the engine turning over. If it was it could just need codes reading and cancelling. If it wasn't turning over there could be more serious issues ie engine seizure.

Bad luck!
But two questions.
Why drive it over 30 miles from Bournemouth for an MOT when there are dozens of local workshops that will do an MOT?
Why take an 16 year old car to the main dealers who will happily charge you up to £200 an hour to diagnose a problem?

Two local Mercedes specialists, Star Tech at Creekmore Industrial Estate or Richard Hamilton at Hamilton Auto Tech in Corfe Mullen would diagnose far cheaper.

Hi AMgeed, I phoned MBS in Southampton and AMG in Ringwood, but they were very busy, Autotech, never been there, MB were the only one to accept the car, turns out the starter battery has packed up, so they say, they have not got round to fitting it, they seem to be very busy. As you say, I will stick to the council MOT place on the Nuffield Ind Est.

Made the mistake of turning the engine of when I got there, after that it would not turn over, even though the engine cooled down to 50c, when I went to see the car at MB in Poole, the temp. was zero, still would not start, battery totally flat.

Overheating and flat battery, auxiliary drive belt ok? I would expect MB to see that but you never know.

Understand re the indies you tried being busy.
Disappointing that MB Poole can't find 10 minutes to fit a new starter battery and have you on your way again.
I'd suggest buying the battery from them and fitting it yourself in the car park. It will probably save you £50 in labour alone.

Thankyou all for your help and advice, i did get stung by Mb for replacing starter battery, never never will I do that again, any way, it still did not pass mot, emissions came out at 0.68, it should be 0.5, so need to do a bit of a air filter filter change, and possibly an oil filter change, has any one tried wynns to help reduce emissions, or any other product to bring it down, or do I need to go to a indy garage to sort it. ???

Can't remember product but I think a good hard run and a pot of stuff from halfrauds does the job. Someone will know wots it's called. Motor wants to be well warmed up. Idling outside ur house won't do it.

Give it an Italian tune up just before the test. Hold it in low gears and give it a good blast.

Hi AMgeed, that's exactly what I did on the way to Eastleigh, only when I got there, the battery decided to kick the bucket, so it would not start, had it not it would have definitely passed, I am going to Poole borough council MOT centre on the Nuffield Estate, A good blast down the Upton bypass should do the trick, I hope.
