E Class 220 CDI 100000 mls

Driving along normally when engine went to max revs and black smoke.

Switch off, few minutes later started OK with intermittent reving.

Next day OK

Now the performance is down and consumption about 34 mpg was 44mpg before.

Limp mode now comes on about once a week.

Any clues before I stqrt to spend money

Sounds like:
failing turbo.
Burning engine oil (check oil level).
Oil seal to inlet gone..

If it continues it will one day start revving and you will be unable to stop it: and BIG Bang. and new engine...

IF and only IF it's the turbo.
Check engine oil level asap.

how doI check oil level, there is no dipstick only dash display? and this shows OK
whistling sound when first starting then the noise goes away.
Do I need to go to a MB dealer to have the diagnostic or will my local guy who has diagnostic gear do?
